With two hundred and fifty million pounds gambled on The Grand National, UK bookmakers stand to lose £100m if Carrie Ford becomes the first female jockey to win the Aintree race on Saturday.
Ford is riding the third favourite Forest Gunner.
“The public is split between believing that because of the Royal wedding, Clan Royal or Royal Auclair will win the National, or that Carrie Ford is destined to become the first woman to ride the winner of the race,” said Hill\’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.
Following the decision to postpone the Royal wedding until Saturday, bookmakers are braced for millions of pounds worth of extra bets from punters backing one of two regally named horses
Punters hope for a repeat of the famous “coincidence” win of Royal Mark, which won at Wolverhampton on the wedding day of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips in 1973.
Another “coincidence” win was in 1992, when heavily backed Party Politics won in an election year.
Wedding themed horses which could also attract backing are Be My Better Half, A Piece of Cake, Historic, Mini Sensation and It Takes Time.
