A survey commissioned by Virgin Money revealed that Brits spend £5 billion a year on online gambling.

Poker, casino, football, lottery and horseracing are the country’s favourites, with most Brits staking between 10 and 20 pounds-a-week. Londoners have emerged as the nation’s biggest gamblers with one in ten spending between 300 and 500 pounds-a-week.

93 per cent of those with internet access polled by the survey, admitted to have placed at least one bet online, and nearly half of them have bet online in the past six months.

80 per cent of online punters will spend a minimum of one hour a week betting online, while a 5 per cent confessed to spend up to five hours a day betting online and up to 10 per cent nationally admitted to use computers at work.

“There’s no doubt online gambling and betting has become incredibly popular across the country – and these figures prove it. The internet – as with so many other areas of life – has simply made something people already enjoy even easier to access and new sites are springing up all the time,” commented a spokesman for Virgin Money.
