Manchester United\’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford was one of the best results of the season for UK bookmakers.

William Hill alone took around £1.5 million on the match, with almost all the money for the Blues which remain overwhelming favourites to win the Premiership title, despite driting to 1.10/1.15 from 1.04 before their loss.

Manchester United and Arsenal, leaded respectively by ten and eleven points, are offered as low as 8.00 for United and 13.00 for Arsenal.

United\’s win was also good news for the bookmakers as Chelsea had been well backed from 21.00 down to 5.50 to not lose all season.

“It was certainly the biggest betting turnover Premiership game of the season – and probably ever – with the best part of £10million gambled throughout the industry,” said a spokesman for William Hill.

“We were also delighted to shed our six figure liability for Chelsea to go undefeated all season, which had come down to 9/2 from 20/1,” he added.

One firm not too happy was Paddy Power who paid out on Chelsea as Premiership winners after just seven games into the season.

“It\’s only a blip, but we\’re starting to sweat up a little. We thought they were invincible,” said a spokesman for the Irish bookmaker.

Following Chelsea\’s defeat, William Hill said to have received many calls from punters wanting to bet that Chelsea will fail to win the title and for the first time they have introduced a special bet to that effect, quoting odds of 7.00 that the Londoners will blow the lead and will not win the title.
