After an extensive surveying of a number of jurisdictions regulating remote gaming, the British magazine Business Britain has awarded Malta\’s Lotteries and Gaming Authority for leading the way in the online gaming industry in terms of regulation and legislation.
The magazine\’s investigative journalists compiled comprehensive reviews of each online gaming organization, which have then been assessed by Business Britain\’s Board of Directors.
The evaluation has been based on a points scoring system with the main areas of interest being: Range of Services, Jurisdiction Benefits, Stringency of Regulation, Marketing and Promotion and Appropriateness to Business Britain’s readers.
Malta started regulating online betting in 2000 under the Public Lotto Ordinance. Since then, the Malta\’s LGA has developed its methodologies to regulate the procedures of remote gaming operations, and in April 2004, published the Remote Gaming Regulations, becoming the first EU member state to regulate remote gaming.
In March 2005 the LGA launched the Malta Remote Gaming Council, which brings together all of the remote gaming licensees. It also launched an online forum aiming to create an ongoing discussion between all stakeholders, ISP providers, legal and financial representatives in the Malta remote gaming industry.
Commenting on winning the award, LGA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mario Galea claimed that this is an extremely important achievement for the Lotteries and Gaming Authority considering the market in which it operates. Galea also expressed his satisfaction that the award came from a country where gambling regulations are highly upheld.
“This award attests to the validity of LGA’s strategy and acknowledges the success the Authority’s registering as the leading remote gaming regulator in Europe,” said Anthony Axisa, LGA’s Legal and Enforcement Director.
