Coral Eurobet, Ladbrokes, William Hill and Totesport will be paying out on both Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls as top trainer at Cheltenham in the wake of the confusion that saw Henderson wrongly presented with the trophy and prize-money.
The Racing Post-sponsored award should have been handed to Nicholls, as although he finished tied on three winners with Henderson, his successful trio accumulated more prize-money.
“It beggars belief that such a ridiculous error can be made on what is a prestigious award and a serious betting event. Fortunately it has only cost Coral approximately twenty grand but no bookie, big or small, enjoys having to payout twice,” said the firm\’s spokesman Simon Clare.
“The error has been in the interpretation of the rules by which the title was to be decided. However, it is just the latest in mistakes by those in administrative positions within the sport, that the betting industry is expected to pick up the tab for. Good job we had a blooming good Festival,” said David Hoods of William Hill.
