Betfair alerted the International Tennis Federation about unusual betting patterns after more than £300,000 was staked on a first round match at Wimbledon won by Britain\’s Richard Bloomfield against Argentina\’s Carlos Berlocq. For Bloomfield it was the first win on six years on the main ATP tour.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin said: “Although the amounts involved were not unusual, the betting patterns were and this led us to contact the ITF.”

The spokesman for the betting exchange added that there is no suggestion that Broomfield was aware in any way about the alleged unusual betting patterns.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe confirmed there had been a gamble on Bloomfield to win the game but he added that this was not unusual at Wimbledon.

“In two person sports, if one person has an injury and just a few people know about this then they may be able to predict better the likely outcome of the game.”

“There is a thin divide between insider information and skulduggery – but the effects are the same. You can\’t ask someone why they are placing a bet.”
