David Carruthers, Chief Executive of BetonSports, and Gary Kaplan, founder of BetonSports, are among the eleven people indicted by a federal grand jury on various charges of racketeering, conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion.
The indictments relate back to the early 90s when Kaplan ran a sportsbook in New York City. After he was arrested in May 1993 on state gambling charges, he moved his operations to Florida and eventually to Costa Rica, the DoJ statement said.
Five of those indicted have been arrested, while US authorities are now seeking extradition of the others charged in the scheme, including Kaplan who resides in Costa Rica, as well as the forfeiture of $4.5 billion in assets and properties.
In conjunction with the indictment, the United States has filed a civil complaint to obtain a court order requiring BetonSports to stop taking sports bets from the country and to return money held by American customers in their wagering accounts. A hearing in the case could be held within 10 days.
