A study conducted over the past five years by a Canadian university revealed that internet gambling sites are regularly targeted for “digital shakedowns” at peak times, such as during major sporting events, by hackers which typically demand between $40,000 and $60,000 in order to suspend their cyber attacks.
John McMullan, a criminologist at the St. Mary\’s University, said while online betting websites have developed better security systems, it seems that cyber criminals have got smarter too.
“For every ability to develop a better security architecture, you can be sure the hackers and cyber extortionists are out there scanning your security, trying to find out how to defeat it,” he said.
