The build up to this one demonstrates the huge disparity between these two sides. Tottenham have taken their first team squad out to Barcelona for a training camp while Wycombe have stayed at home on Marlow Road, putting up with the rain and sometimes freezing temperatures.
Tottenham did this last season as well and it proved a refreshing break for a young side in the middle of a hard season, as we all know it wasn’t quite refreshing enough for them as they seemed to run into a wall with just a few games to go.
Another similarity with last season is that the FA Cup was treated as somewhat of an afterthought with rotated sides being played in each of their 3 FA Cup matches last season and against Aston Villa in the third round this time. Harry Kane,, Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen and both of Spurs regular full backs were rested for the visit of Aston Villa, Spurs fans are expecting the same against Wycombe Wanderers in the fourth round.
Wycombe aren’t really able to do the same thing though cult icon Adebayo Akinfenwa may get a rare start and that could give Spurs youngster Cameron Carter-Vickers a bit of a workout as he’s unlikely to have ever come across a player quite like “The Beast” in his previous footballing experience.
Wycombe are currently 5th in League Two and not far off the automatic promotion places. Matches like this FA Cup Fourth Round tie don’t come along very often but they bring with them a nice injection of funds that can be used to propel the side onto greater things in the league. Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth will be hoping that happens this time round and may be looking at players he can bring in to achieve just that.
I doubt the Wycombe Wanderers players hold much hope of actually winning this game. The bookies are in the same boat and the odds on a Tottenham win are down at around 1.14 (1.17 with Pinnacle and William Hill). Those odds are too low for me and I won’t be working in that market. I did take a look at the Both Teams To Score market but decided to give that one a wide berth because of the uncertainty about Tottenham’s team. A weakened side could very well concede a goal but they should still have enough about them to win.
Instead I’m looking to the Over/Under 3.5 goals market and will be going for the Under in this match. At 1.95 with Paddy Power I think those are odds which just about work in our favour. If I can find a way to watch this game I shall be tuning in, mainly to see how Spurs cope with a player like Akinfenwa but also to see some of the youngsters who are expected to start.
