Saturdays lunchtime game sees two of Englands oldest clubs come up against each other in the Worlds oldest cup competition.
On the face of it this should be an easy win for Liverpool but they have only just come off the back of a League Cup second leg tie against Southampton and still have an outside chance of winning the title.
Wolves have had a difficult season but things seem to be slowly coming together for new boss Paul Lambert and he oversaw the clubs win over Stoke City in the previous round where Helder Costa and Matt Doherty scored the goals that took them through.
There’s been a fair bit of change at Wolves over the last year or so with 3 managers/head coaches in place at various times and a new set of owners also arriving. With the help of super agent Jorge Mendes Wolves fans will be hoping they can push on and improve on their current league position of 18th.
Liverpool have been known to experience a bit of turmoil themselves but under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp they have continued to improve the squad and build towards a side that could end up challenging for the title. Philippe Coutinho obviously believes in the current project as he’s just signed a contract extension taking him through to 2022. Being realistic though, Liverpool will need to improve their defence if they want to be up among the clubs talked about as title challengers.
Jurgen Klopp rotated his side for both matches against Plymouth Argyle in the third round and he’ll be tempted to do the same again but maybe not to the same extent. Youngsters like Trent Alexander-Arnold may very well get another run out but Ejaria and Woodburn may find themselves dropped to the bench as more established players take their place.
At odds of 1.27 (Pinnacle) I don’t think there is a lot of value to be had in that selection and if a rotated squad is put out then there really is no value at all.
Wolves haven’t been big scorers this season and even up against a weakened Liverpool side they may find goals hard to come by. I think the responsibility of scoring goals may be down to Liverpool and if Sadio Mane was in the team and not away at the African Cup of Nations then I’d be backing a decent Liverpool win. As it is Mane and his Senegal side have qualified for the next round and Liverpool will have to wait a while longer for his return.
Instead of looking for a certain number of goals or trying to predict a win for either side I’m stepping into the Asian Handicap market and going for Wolves +1.5 at 2.25 with BetVictor. A weakened Liverpool side may not dominate the match in the way that the full side would and Wolves will be looking to keep the game respectable so giving them a slight edge could very well work in our favour.
