Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics
Wednesday, July 03, 2024 – 09:40 PM ET at Oakland Coliseum
In this matchup of two of the worst teams in the American League, we do not feel that Davis Daniel and the Angels can be trusted as road favorites. Thus, we are backing Joey Estes and the Athletics at home.
Was First Start Real?
The Angels come off a surprising 6-1 homestand, but they resumed their losing ways here in Oakland last night to drop to 36-48 overall. Speaking of “surprising”, that would be an understated description of Daniel’s first Major League start last week where he tossed eight scoreless innings allowing only four hits with eight strikeouts against the Tigers.
Before casting those Rookie of the Year votes though, consider that Davis has never been a highly regarded prospect and he had a 5.33 ERA and 4.67 xFIP at the AAA level when he was recalled. He is already 27 years old, and his only previous cup of coffee in the big leagues was three relief appearances last year during which he posted a 6.00 xFIP in 12.1 innings.
In short, we are basically daring Daniel to match his season debut now that he is a road favorite!
Rounding To Form?
Estes, on the other hand, was more highly regarded when he was called up as a 21-year-old last season, although he was hit hard in his two starts. The youngster may have poor frontline stats in nine starts this season also with a 5.24 ERA and 4.76 xFIP, but he now appears to be rounding to form and ready to start fulfilling his potential.
You see, Joey struggled over his first three starts, but he has since allowed three runs or less in five of his last six outings. His most recent start came against these Angels in Anaheim, where he allowed two runs on only three hits with an impressive eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings of a tough-luck loss.
So he is again facing an Angels lineup ranked only 21st in wRC+ against right-handers at 94.
The Pick
We fully believe that Daniel’s season debut was a fluke and that he may not replicate the rest of the season. Conversely, we think the recent improvement of Estes is more legitimate, and thus we are betting on the A’s as home underdogs on Wednesday.
Predicted Score: Athletics 5 – Angels 3
