Buffalo Bills vs. Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, December 08, 2024 – 04:25 PM ET at SoFi Stadium

Buffalo Cruised Past San Francisco

Josh Allen showcased his versatility in the Buffalo Bills’ dominant 35-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, sealing the AFC East title. After the win, Allen celebrated alongside coach Sean McDermott by making snow angels, capping off a historic performance.

Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history, and only the seventh player in the Super Bowl era, to record a passing, rushing, and receiving touchdown in a single game. His remarkable outing included a seven-yard touchdown pass to Mack Hollins, an eight-yard rushing score, and a receiving touchdown on a trick play.

The receiving touchdown came in spectacular fashion. As Amari Cooper made a one-handed grab, he was swarmed by two 49ers defenders but managed to lateral the ball to Allen. The quarterback sprinted to the left corner of the end zone, diving past the pylon for the score.

The Bills capitalized on four of five possessions spanning halftime, extending their lead to 28-3. Ray Davis started the surge with a five-yard touchdown run, followed by James Cook’s career-best 65-yard rushing score, contributing to his 107-yard game on the ground.

A Performance for the Ages

Allen finished with an efficient stat line, completing 13 of 17 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, rushing three times for 18 yards and a touchdown, and catching one pass for seven yards and another score.

The home crowd showered him with “MVP!” chants as he rested for much of the fourth quarter. With this performance, Allen set a franchise milestone, breaking Hall of Famer Jim Kelly’s record with 247 career touchdowns (186 passing, 59 rushing, and two receiving).

Buffalo, riding a seven-game winning streak, improved to 10-2 for the first time since 1991. They also became just the eighth team in NFL history, and the first since the 2009 Colts, to clinch a division title with five games remaining. Their offense has been electric, scoring 30 or more points in six consecutive games.

Los Angeles Won in New Orleans

Matthew Stafford delivered in crunch time as the Los Angeles Rams defeated the New Orleans Saints 21-14. Stafford threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Kyren Williams added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The Saints nearly forced overtime, driving inside the Rams’ 10-yard line late in the game. However, edge rusher Jared Verse tipped Derek Carr’s fourth-down pass, securing the Rams’ win. Stafford finished 14 of 24 for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Puka Nacua and Demarcus Robinson contributed through the air, with Nacua catching five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Robinson added 49 yards and a score on two receptions.

Key Matchups

With both squads showcasing offensive firepower and stout defense, this matchup could come down to execution in critical moments.

Josh Allen vs. Rams Defense

Allen’s historic performance against the 49ers highlighted his versatility as a passer, rusher, and even receiver. Facing a Rams defense that sealed their win with a critical deflection by edge rusher Verse, Allen’s ability to improvise and create opportunities will be pivotal.

The Rams will need to bring consistent pressure and stay disciplined in coverage to limit Allen’s dual-threat capabilities. However, if Allen can exploit mismatches and extend plays, the Bills’ offense could overwhelm the Rams.

James Cook vs. Rams Run Defense

Cook’s explosive 65-yard touchdown run against the 49ers showcased his big-play potential, and his 107-yard game provided a much-needed balance to the Bills’ offense. The Rams will have to focus on containing Cook, as a strong running game will make Buffalo’s offense even more difficult to defend.

Conversely, if the Rams can force Buffalo into a pass-heavy game plan, it might create opportunities for their pass rush to disrupt Allen’s rhythm.

Matthew Stafford vs. Bills Defense

Stafford proved he still has the ability to deliver in key moments, throwing two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Saints. Facing a Bills defense that has stifled opponents during their seven-game win streak, Stafford will need to stay accurate and protect the ball.

Buffalo’s ability to generate pressure and force turnovers could be the deciding factor, especially if Stafford is unable to establish a consistent rhythm.

Kyren Williams vs. Bills Front Seven

Williams had an impressive outing against the Saints with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries. His ability to control the ground game will be crucial in keeping the Bills’ offense off the field.

However, Buffalo’s defense has been disciplined against the run during their hot streak. If the Bills can bottle up Williams early, it will put added pressure on Stafford to move the chains through the air.

Special Teams and Turnovers

Both teams have shown the ability to capitalize on mistakes, and this game could hinge on which team avoids costly errors. Buffalo’s high-powered offense thrives on short fields, while the Rams’ defense has proven capable of delivering key stops when it matters most. A game-changing turnover or a clutch special teams play could swing momentum in either direction.

The Pick

This game promises to be a battle of offensive versatility versus defensive resilience. The Bills’ ability to score in a variety of ways, combined with Josh Allen’s MVP-caliber form, gives them a slight edge. While Stafford and the Rams have shown flashes of brilliance, Buffalo’s balanced attack and ability to control the game’s tempo could prove too much. Look for a high-scoring game on Sunday.
