Boise State Broncos vs. Oregon Ducks

Saturday, September 07, 2024 – 10:00 PM ET at Autzen Stadium

Can Oregon Finally Beat Boise State?

Oregon has never beaten Boise State, going 0-3 against them. Both teams won in Week 1, with Boise State beating Georgia Southern, 56-45, while Oregon took care of Idaho State 24-14.

Ashton Jeanty ran for six touchdowns and Boise State had 651 total yards of offense but also allowed Georgia Southern to score 45 points.

Oregon led Idaho by just three points in the fourth quarter but scored a late touchdown to pull away as Dillon Gabriel had 380 passing yards.

Both Teams Underperformed Last Week

Oregon faces a significant challenge in containing Boise State’s standout running back Jeanty, who exploded in Week 1 with 267 rushing yards and six touchdowns on just 20 carries.

The Ducks aim to gain momentum after a shaky start to the season, where they allowed three sacks and struggled to convert opportunities into touchdowns. Despite these issues, quarterback Gabriel shined, completing 41 of 49 passes for 380 yards and two touchdowns—both marks setting new records for an Oregon QB debut.

Both teams entered the season with high expectations, and while each showcased statistical dominance in their Week 1 matchups, questions linger as they head into Week 2.

Oregon’s offense moved the ball efficiently between the 20s but faltered in crucial moments, hampered by penalties, 4th down mishaps, and an inability to finish drives with touchdowns, culminating in an underwhelming 24-14 win over FCS opponent Idaho.

Boise State, on the other hand, was an offensive powerhouse, amassing 651 total yards of offense, averaging 9.9 yards per play, and capitalizing on red zone opportunities. However, their defense struggled, allowing Georgia Southern to rack up 27 first downs and 322 passing yards.

With Oregon’s offensive line showing vulnerabilities, the Boise State defense can take solace in their ability to contain Georgia Southern’s rushing attack last week.

The Pick

If Boise State can replicate that defensive success and Jeanty continues to perform at a high level, they could keep this game close. While the initial line favored Oregon by three touchdowns, I still lean toward Boise State covering the spread at +20.5.

Although Oregon is the superior team and likely to find their offensive rhythm, the potential for a late-game surge by Boise State remains, especially if the Ducks slow down in the fourth quarter after a big early lead and rest their starters.
