Two of the most popular names in the world of competitive food eating, Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi, will squash a decade’s long beef on September 2nd when they compete in a Netflix-sponsored hot-dog eating contest in Sin City.

Let’s take a closer look at the event’s odds before betting on it at top-rated sportsbooks

Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi

September 02, 2024 – 03:00 PM ET at HyperX

Wiener Takes All

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut did not make his scheduled appearance at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest due to a contractual obligation he has with a vegan hotdog brand. However, his legacy is not in dispute as he won the Nathan’s contest a record 16 times and set the world record of 76 frankfurters, including the bun, in 10 minutes. The 40-year-old also holds 55 world eating records in assorted categories.

Takeru Kobayashi has been dubbed the “Godfather of competitive eating” after winning Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest for six straight years from 2001–2006. But once Joey Jaws burst onto the scene the following year, the spotlight shifted away from Kobayashi to the new hot dog king. The pair’s last epic encounter occurred in 2009 when Chestnut downed 68 hot dogs to Kobayashi’s 64 ½ to remain atop the hotdog-eating world.

The Ultimate Food Fight

Because both competitors have contractual disputes with Nathan’s and Major League Eating they have decided to go all-in on a Netflix-sponsored event at the HyperX Arena Las Vegas, located at the Luxor Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, which will be streamed live on September 2, 2024, at 3:00 PM ET.

“Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival,” said Chestnut. “Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can’t wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It’s time to give the people what they want!”

Kobayashi stopped competing in the Nathan’s event after a contract dispute with Major League Eating and has been somewhat of an enigma after creating a ruckus at the 2010 Nathan’s event when, as a spectator, he rushed the stage after Chestnut won another title. Kobayashi maintains he only did it to appease his fans and congratulate Chestnut, but either way, he was arrested shortly thereafter.

“Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time,” Kobayashi told Netflix. “This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out.”

What Are the Odds?

If it’s action you seek on this event then there’s no better place to turn than BetOnline. Despite the hype, this rivalry is not nearly as competitive as the Netflix producers would lead one to believe. The odds on this matchup more closely resemble the Ronda Rousey versus Holly Holm MMA championship match from 2015 with the former as a prohibitive favorite. But we all know how that ended, don’t we?

In this case, we see Joey Chestnut as a similarly enormous favorite at -1000 to Kobayashi +550. There’s no good reason to bet on either side as Chestnut is going to win this going away but if things go sideways I’m not going to embarrass my bankroll. However, there are a few props we might want to nibble on if you’ll pardon the bun…er, I mean pun.

  • Chestnut Number of Hotdogs Eaten in 10 Minutes – 62.5 (O-135/U -105)

Considering Joey Jaws devoured 76 of America’s favorite processed treats in 2021, it’s easy to see him putting away 63 and shutting Kobayashi up forever. However, his last two events at Nathan’s saw him retaining his title with 63 in 2022 and 62 in 2023 before forgoing the event this past July.

Nevertheless, this is going to be held in Sin City and has garnered plenty of curiosity all over the globe. Joey C is more likely to slurp down 70 wieners than he is 60, so we will go high on this prop.

Kobayashi Number of Hotdogs Eaten in 10 Minutes – 49.5 (U-130/O -110)

The totals on both these competitors show the true disparity between them. If the oddsmakers at BetOnline are on the money, Chestnut is a 13-hotdog favorite over the challenger, but you won’t hear anyone from Netflix breathe a word about that as this is supposed to be the battle of the Titans. Unfortunately, there is only one true titan between them.

There’s no doubt Kobayashi is a legend in the food-eating world and has six Nathan’s titles under his belt. He’s no slouch, but he’s not been as devoted to his craft as Chestnut. The last big contest he won was back in 2017 when he ate 159 tacos in 10 minutes at the Gringo Bandito Chronic Tacos Challenge.

The man will always have a special place in our bellies but at 46, and seemingly out of the game for a bit, I’ve got to go low.
