Jake Paul recently took a break from chatting about his upcoming fight with Mike Tyson to challenge YouTuber, IShowSpeed, to a 40-yard dash footrace and said he would pay big money if he lost.
Let’s take a closer look at the preliminary details on the event before betting on it at top-rated sportsbooks.
Publicity Hound
Jake Paul is nothing if not a publicity hound, and, frankly, he’s damn good at it.
He’s so good that he’s become a money-making machine, whether it’s through his podcasts, PPV boxing events, or his piece of the mobile sports betting site, Betr. Whatever he touches seems to turn to gold, and for a large segment of his audience, he’s the man they love to hate.
His latest foray that is keeping the internet buzzing is a challenge to a 19-year-old who goes by the name of IShowSpeed. Even if you’re unfamiliar, you’ve probably deduced he’s pretty fast on his feet, and if you’ve seen one of his videos showing him jumping over a speeding Lamborghini, then you’d no doubt be convinced.
Well, he’s been blowing up on YouTube, as evidenced by the 28 million subscribers he’s got, and that attracted the attention of Mr. Jake Paul, a man with 20 million subscribers of his own and an additional 43 million over Instagram, TikTok, and X.
The Call Out
After watching Speed’s many feats of pure athleticism, Jake decided he would challenge the young YouTuber to a 40-yard dash, believing he could beat the kid at his own game with $25,000 of Paul’s money riding on his own ego. Here’s what went down.
In an episode of BS with Jake Paul last month, the eponymous host said, “I want to race Speed. In a 40-yard dash, I beat Speed. Let’s do it. Speed, this is the call-out.” That challenge was readily accepted by Speed, who said, “Yo Jake, so I’ve seen a clip saying you want to race me for $25k. (…) Let’s do it, bro. Let’s run it,” Paul responded.
It’s been said that Speed runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, a respectable time for any NFL wide receiver, and if true, one that the beefier Jake Paul would find impossible to beat. But let’s face it. Jake Paul dropping 25 large on a publicity stunt is well worth the money, particularly because his management team would make sure he gets that back 10-fold in advertising revenue.
The challenge has become so popular that even some of the major players in the offshore sports betting market are hanging odds. One of the most trusted books out there, BetOnline, has Speed as a prohibitive -2000 favorite while Paul is +700.
This appears to be a no-lose proposition for IShowSpeed, but at those odds, it might be worth a few bucks on the underdog in case Speed pulls a hammy and JP gets lucky yet again.
