New Orleans Pelicans vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Sunday, April 09, 2023 – 03:30 PM EDT at Target Center

What You Should Know

The NBA: It’s tank-tastic. Sunday is the last day of the 2022-23 regular season, and all 30 of the league’s teams will be in action – sort of. Most of the playoff seeds have been determined, so those teams are going to rest most of their star players, as will the non-playoff clubs looking to improve their lottery chances at the 2023 NBA Draft.

This is nightmare fuel for NBA bettors. However, there’s a small handful of games in the Western Conference where failure is not an option. There won’t be any slacking off in Sunday’s finale between the No. 8 New Orleans Pelicans and No. 9 Minnesota Timberwolves, that’s for sure.

Even if both teams have assured themselves at least a spot in the Western play-in tournament, the Pelicans (42-39 SU, 39-41-1 ATS) can still earn a Top-6 seed and direct entry into the playoffs with a win here and some help elsewhere.

The Timberwolves (41-40 SU, 39-42 ATS), meanwhile, can only move up as high as No. 7, but getting into the 7-8 Game at the play-in tournament is way better than having to start with the 9-10 Game. With all that at stake, you might want to avoid the shenanigans with those other games and stick with this Pelicans-Timberwolves matchup for your NBA picks. And in this case, our two recommended picks are both NBA player props.

Is Karl-Anthony Towns Playing?

He’d better be. This will be the second of back-to-back games for Minnesota; they beat the San Antonio Spurs 151-131 on Saturday, with Towns racking up 22 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in 28 minutes of work. That makes Over 4.5 Assists on the overseas NBA lines an easy choice for our basketball picks, especially with the +120 payout.

The projections we’re following here at the ranch have Towns dishing somewhere between 5-6 dimes this Sunday.

Towns has posted 4.8 assists per game for the Wolves this year, so you’d think this is a slam-dunk but don’t forget, this is a different team now. While Towns was on the injured list, Minnesota got busy ahead of the trade deadline and ended up bringing in Mike Conley Jr. at point guard, reuniting Conley with former Utah Jazz teammate Rudy Gobert.

This is definitely working out for both Towns and the Timberwolves. Everything fits better chemistry-wise than it did before Towns got hurt, although as far as assists are concerned, Towns only has 27 in his seven games back in uniform.

Ah, but now that fellow big Naz Reid is out indefinitely with a sprained wrist, the Wolves have the incentive to keep only one of Towns and Gobert on the court as much as possible, thus freeing up Towns for more passing – which we saw Saturday versus San Antonio. More of the same, please.

Is Brandon Ingram Playing?

He’s not on the injured list, and the Pellies haven’t played since Friday, so we’d expect Ingram to suit up Sunday. And in this case, we’re targeting Ingram (5.8 assists per game) to go Under 6.5 assists when they visit the Wolves.

The +105 payout is an important part of the reason why. Again, you have to look beyond Ingram’s season assist average and consider the loss of Zion Williamson (hamstring); Ingram has posted 6.9 assists per game since the All-Star break.

That being said, Ingram is still projected for somewhere around five dimes at the NBA odds this Sunday against a Minnesota team that ranks No. 12 in the league in assists allowed at 25.0 per game.

Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trail Blazers

Sunday, April 09, 2023 – 03:30 PM EDT at Moda Center

Okay, my sources tell me that everyone wants to bet on Stephen Curry shooting the lights out, so we’re including one more tasty player prop: Over 4.5 made threes for Steph (4.9 three-pointers made per game) at +105 vigorish.

The No. 6 Warriors (43-38 SU, 38-41-2 ATS) are still fighting over a playoff spot. The No. 13 Blazers (33-48 SU, 39-41-1 ATS) have been tanking for a while – and they’re playing on zero days of rest. Bet accordingly, and may the sphere be with you.
