Oregon Ducks vs. Oregon State Beavers

Saturday, September 14, 2024 – 03:30 PM ET at Reser Stadium

Will Oregon Play Well?

The Ducks are desperate for a convincing win after back-to-back frustrating outings against less talented teams like Idaho and Boise State. A strong showing won’t come easily against the Beavers, but a commanding performance could be a much-needed boost.

Oregon’s season opener against Idaho was closer than expected. The Ducks held a 14-0 halftime lead and narrowly escaped with a 24-14 win. Dillon Gabriel threw for 380 yards and two touchdowns, while Jordan James added 95 rushing yards and a score.

In their second game of the season, the Ducks found themselves trailing Boise State 20-14 at halftime but managed a dramatic 37-34 comeback victory. Gabriel threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while James contributed 102 rushing yards on 17 carries. Evan Stewart was a standout with 112 receiving yards and a touchdown on five catches.

Despite the win over Boise State, the Ducks had plenty of issues. Nine penalties, a meager 3.1 yards per carry on the ground, and a minus-2 turnover differential nearly cost them the game. It took a clutch 25-yard field goal from Atticus Sappington as time expired to seal the victory.

The Oregon State Defense Will Be Tested

Oregon State began their season with a comfortable 38-15 win over Idaho State. Quarterback Gevani McCoy passed for 114 yards and one touchdown, but the true stars were Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson, who combined for 315 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 44 carries.

The Beavers followed that up with a 21-0 shutout victory over San Diego State in Week 2. Leading 7-0 for much of the game, Oregon State added two late scores to ice it. McCoy threw for 181 yards and one touchdown, while Griffin and Hankerson combined for 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries.

The Beavers’ defense was stifling, allowing only 179 total yards and forcing the Aztecs into a dismal 2 of 13 on 3rd and 4th downs.

The Pick

Right now, it’s tough to predict which version of Oregon will show up in this game. On paper, the Ducks have the talent to compete with any team in the country, but inconsistency and mistakes have plagued them so far this season.

Given the Ducks’ struggles, the Beavers have a legitimate shot to keep this game close. Still, there’s reason to believe the rivalry atmosphere could be exactly what Oregon needs to finally hit its stride. What the Oregon State defense has done so far isn’t sustainable and the Oregon offense will eventually explode, so I like the Over here.
