Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics
Wednesday, September 25, 2024 – 09:40 PM ET at Oakland Coliseum
We are not expecting much scoring on Wednesday in a game between two teams just playing out the string this final week of the season. We are betting the Under when Cody Bradford and the Rangers visit Brady Basso and the Athletics.
Very Consistent
The defending World Champion Rangers have been very disappointing going 74-83 with an offense that has tailed off considerably since last year. Obviously, the 26-year-old Bradford is not to blame for that as he is having his best Major League season, although that poor run support is the main reason he sits at just 6-3.
Cody Bradford deserves better based on his fine 3.59 ERA and 3.81 xFIP over 13 appearances (12 starts). He has a very good K/BB ratio of 8.17/1.24 per nine innings with a nice 5-pitch arsenal led by a change-up rated 104 in Stuff+. But perhaps what we like best about Bradford has been his consistency while allowing three runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts.
Promising Rookie
The Athletics made a bit of progress this season as they will not finish in last place in the AL West, although a 68-89 record is still nothing to celebrate. However, they do have some promising young starters with Brady Basso being part of that mix.
The rookie southpaw has not seemed intimidated over his first 19.1 innings in the Major Leagues, going 1-0 with a 2.33 ERA and 3.70 xFIP. Granted the strikeouts are not there yet at this early stage at 7.45/9 after consistently posting double digit K-rates in the minors, but that may change facing a disappointing Texas offense ranked 20th in wRC+ against left-handers. And the youngster’s control has been fine with the walk rate at 1.86/9.
The Pick
That makes this a matchup of two pitchers with nice potential, two lacking offenses, and two teams looking forward to the season ending on Sunday. This sounds like a perfect recipe for an Under in Oakland.
