Sloane Stephens vs. Yulia Putintseva

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 – 10:15 AM ET at Court 7

On the women's side, the day will end with a fantastic matchup between Sloane Stephens and Yulia Putintseva. Stephens is a former Grand Slam champion who always raises her level of play for the big tournaments. Putintseva is a fiery player from Kazakhstan who enjoys being the villain, and will not be deterred by a hostile crowd. Stephens is ranked number 35 in the world and Putintseva is ranked number 39. This is a close matchup to end the first round.

Sloane Stephens

Stephens started the clay swing well. She won a title in Rouen, as well as making the third rounds in Charleston and Madrid. Unfortunately, after that, she suffered three opening-round losses, including at a 125k in Paris. So, after a nice start to the clay season, Stephens' level of play has definitely declined.

Sloane Stephens is an all-around player, although she prefers to be the counterpuncher. This style of play is well suited to clay court tennis, and her ability to switch gears between the aggressor and the defender will give her the advantage of versatility in this match. Her opponent definitely employs defensive tactics for most of her matches. Will Sloane get out of her comfort zone and be the aggressor or will this be a battle of two counterpunchers?

Sloane Stephens has historically done well here at Roland Garros and has an 11-1 record in the first round. Stephens made the final here in 2018 so she knows how to get it done on these slow clay courts.

Grand Slam Singles Results

Yulia Putintseva

Putintseva has played well as of late. She made the fourth round in Indian Wells, a tournament with a slow playing surface that usually predicates clay court success.

She followed that up by making the quarterfinals in Miami and Madrid, and she also made the third round in Rome. To make the third round, Putintseva defeated Stephens in the tournament. The win pushed Putintseva to 4-3 against Stephens.

These players always play close matches. The first six times these two players faced off, it went to three sets. The first straight set win occurred in Rome two weeks ago, when Putintseva ousted Stephens from that tournament.

Yulia Putintseva has also had success here at Roland Garros and is 8-2 in the first round.

The Pick

This matchup is tricky for Sloane Stephens who would rather be the counter-puncher, but Yulia Putintseva only knows how to play one way and that is a defensive counter-punching style. Stephens will be forced to be the aggressor, which will take her out of her comfort zone.

Also, the recent rise in level of play for Putintseva, combined with the recent decline in play for Stephens indicates that Putintseva is in better form right now. However, we can count that this will be a close match.

Our first two bets for today's tennis action are Yulia Putintseva's moneyline and Sloane Stephens vs. Yulia Putintseva over 21.5 games at -108 betting odds.

Erika Andreeva vs. Aryna Sabalenka

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - 09:15 AM ET at Court Philippe Chatrier

Aryna Sabalenka

Sabalenka is clearly the second-best player in the world on clay. She steamrolled her way through the fields at the last two Masters 1000 tournaments held on clay only to come up short in the final against Iga Swiatek. However, she displayed the clay court prowess that has helped her rise to the top of the standings and make this rivalry with Swiatek quite exciting.

Last season, Aryna Sabalenka made the semifinals here at Roland Garros. Sabalenka has won five straight first-round matches here in Paris.

Erika Andreeva

Andreeva is a young up-and-coming player who is looking to get her initial first round win at a Grand Slam. This will be the third Grand Slam Tournament she has played in. She lost to Petra Kvitova in round one at the US Open in 2022 and then last season here in Paris she fell to Emma Navarro in three sets. Andreeva is one of the youngest members of the top 100. This will be her first match against a player ranked in the top 10.

The Pick

Aryna Sabalenka is a huge favorite in this match and rightfully so. However, the opening round jitters combined with Andreeva's ability to play loose with no pressure should allow Andreeva to have a good showing here. I like Andreeva to keep it close and cover the seven-game spread. Our second bet for today is Erika Andreeva plus seven games.

Tenis Pick: Erika Andreeva +7 Games (-119) at Bookmaker

Holger Rune vs. Dan Evans

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - 09:30 AM ET at Court Suzanne Lenglen

Holger Rune

Rune is a young up-and-coming player from Denmark who has made plenty of headlines. He is a fiery player on court, and at the age of 21, he is already ranked number 13 in the world.

Rune had a decent clay swing, beating the players he should and suffering a couple losses. However, he plays a player towards the end of his career when he meets Dan Evans.

Dan Evans

Evans is 34 years old but his grinding playstyle and grinding hard lifestyle has led him to age quicker than most players. Evans is near the end of his run as a top player.

Evans failed to win a match here on the ATP clay swing and only won two rounds at an ITF Challenger event. Now he faces a tough matchup against a young player with plenty of talent and stamina.

The Pick

Holger Rune is a sharp player, who will eventually make the top five once he gets things figured out as far as his coaching and routine.

As much as we like Holger Rune’s play, this is more of a fade of Dan Evans. Evans is on the last leg of his career and this could be his swan song at this tournament. Unfortunately for Evans, Rune will make quick work of his past his prime foe. Our final play for today is Holger Rune minus 7.5 games at -106 betting odds.
