Top Golf Pick: Daniel Berger To Win Sony Open (+6000) at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)
This week’s Sony Open is the second event on the PGA Tour, following last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, as the Tour kicks off its annual two-week stay in Hawaii.
Sony Open in Hawaii
January 6–12, 2025 at Waialae Country Club
Course Notes
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Par 70, 7044 yards
- Bermuda grass throughout the course with greens a little grainer than mainland America.
One of the shortest yet most intricate tests on the PGA Tour, this course favors grinders like Charles Howell, Jerry Kelly, and Brian Stuard, whose lack of length isn’t a disadvantage. Over the years, players like them have thrived here, making it another wide-open betting week.
Waialae Wildcards
Last week’s winner, Hideki Matsuyama, is a solid betting favorite priced at (+1000) given he was champion here three years ago.
This week’s test has historically thrown up many long-priced winners and, at this point, we must spare a moment to remember how the late Grayson Murray won the title last year at (+50000).
That surprising result was indicative of many here at the Waialae Country Club, which has been known to throw up a few surprises over the years. This is an event where we can confidently say that the top of the betting market will not dominate as it does on many weeks of the PGA Tour.
Sony Open’s Recent Champions
Will It Be Berger’s Time in the Sony?
In years gone by, it was always in my notes that Daniel Berger played very well when returning from a break. Indeed, the thirty-one-year-old from Florida won the first event back after the prolonged COVID-19 hiatus in 2020 against the strongest field that ever contested the Charles Schwab Challenge.
This four-time winner on the PGA Tour suffered terrible back and neck injuries in 2022 and 2023 to derail a flourishing career. In fact, his comeback last season, despite seeing him slowly build his confidence back up, still required a strong finish to the year to retain his playing privileges.
To lose Berger off the PGA Tour would have been terribly unlucky for both the tour and the player. However, now back to full fitness, he will have an eye on locking in his fifth PGA Tour title and the exemption that goes with it.
What better place for Daniel Berger to start his season than at a course where he has always been comfortable, with a 7th place the last time he played here in 2021 being his best?
We suggest using BetOnline to bet on Daniel Berger as a top 10, top 20 and an outright winner.

Consider Taylor Montgomery in the Place Markets in Hawaii
I am drawn to Taylor Montgomery’s chances this week. Hopefully not like a moth to a flame, but there are good reasons to seriously consider the twenty-nine-year-old from Las Vegas.
Montgomery is one of the best putters on the PGA Tour and the last two seasons have seen him open his year at the Waialae Country Club with a 13th and 12th place finish.
Given he is priced as a third top 20 finish at (+1200), this is an easy selection for readers and followers. Last year he finished off the season appearing to be working his way back to form after a dreadful run of results in the middle of the year. That ability to play well fresh is one we’ve used to identify Daniel Berger’s chance this week and one that has been historically profitable over the years at the Sony Open.
Interestingly, he started strongly on his penultimate start at Bermuda, where he was second in the first-round leader, and BetOnline has him priced attractively in that market too.
