This year will be the fifth time in six seasons that the local parklands track, the Memorial Park Golf Course, hosts the Houston Open.
Rather unusually, the track is a municipal course but that does not detract from what the pros have called a championship test and the perfect tune-up for the Masters in a couple of weeks’ time.
The course was renovated in 2019 by the esteemed designer Tom Doak, into a par 70 at over 7400 yards, setting the golfers one of the lengthiest tests of the season.
Long and straight off the tee is an advantage allied with a strong short game on and around the Bermuda Poa overseeded greens.
A windy forecast for Houston at the weekend means a challenging week is in store.

Has Thompson Timed His Run Perfectly?
Davis Thompson was an eye-catcher at the Players Championship with a top-10 finish, his highest finish of 2025 so far.
Last year was a breakout one for the burgeoning talent from Atlanta with his maiden PGA Tour title at the John Deere Classic amongst a slew of other top finishes.
Strength Off the Tee and Improved Putting
There is no doubt, this week’s track plays into Thompson’s strength off the tee, and as usual, that part of his game has been solid and reliable all year. The eye-catching stat at TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship was how his work on the greens improved markedly as he ranked 20th in the Stroke Gained Category.
Course History
Throughout his career, it is Thompson’s work on the greens that has been his ‘Achilles Heel’ so if that improvement continues at the Memorial Municipal Golf Course, he looks bound to be a contender this week.
Indeed, his two previous efforts in Houston have indicated he likes the course and last year, it kickstarted his stellar year with a 23rd place finish when arriving in Texas off four missed cuts and low on confidence.
