Readers and followers of my BMR column will still be counting their winnings from last week as Viktor Hovland won the BMW Championship for us at (+1600). That win included a remarkable final round of 61 at Olympia Fields which is probably the best round of golf all year anywhere in the world to illustrate the standard of play the young Norwegian is reaching.

So, yes, Hovland can be VIKtorious this week and that is because 2023 has seen the twenty-five-year-old move to the next level of the sport. A runner-up finish at the PGA Championship to Brooks Koepka when he did little or nothing wrong, followed by a 7th at the Masters, and 3rd at the Players Championship.

Can Hovland Be Viktorious Again This Week?

In the interim Hovland won the prestigious Memorial Tournament at Jack’s place to cement his position as the “new kid on the block” at the top of golf.

Hovland would entrench himself further at the very top of the sport this week if he wins the Tour Championship and I believe there are reasons to be confident. In the fall of 2021, Hovland followed up a win at the Mayakoba with one at the Hero World Challenge on the PGA Tour and he played superbly at East Lake the same year when finishing 4th.

All the pieces are in place for Viktor Hovland to win this week’s Tour Championship so take the (+500) at Bovada, one of our top U.S. betting sites.

Be Careful With Your Bets on the Tour Championship

At BMR all our sportsbooks will be offering two markets to bet on this week so be careful!

The first market will be the normal outright one which reflects the starting strokes applied pre-event. The other market will be the 72-hole stroke play market.

Weather Forecast

There are extremely hot temperatures forecast for Atlanta in Georgia this week, with the chance of thunderstorms and showers for Sunday.

FedEx Rankings, Starting Strokes, and Betting Odds

The winner of the FedEx Tour Championship historically will likely be from the top 10 as listed below although the 72-hole stroke play market is winnable for all 30 competitors.

1. Scottie Scheffler –10 (+140)

Like last year, Scheffler starts in pole position and after last week’s loss, is more vulnerable this year than last with an informed Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland in his rear-view mirror, breathing down his neck.

2. Viktor Hovland –8 (+500)

BMR golf pick - see above.

3. Rory McIlroy –7 (+350)

The Northern Irishman, Rory McIlroy is going for a fourth Tour Championship in eight years at East Lake. Must be respected!

4. Jon Rahm –6 (+900)

The US Masters champion looks over the top for the season and is readily opposable this week.

5. Lucas Glover –5 (+5000)

Lucas Glover returned to something like the norm last week after the euphoria of back-to-back wins on the PGA Tour. If the flat stick behaves, the veteran former US Open winner could be an outside factor this week.

6. Max Homa –4 (+3500)

Max Homa played superbly at East Lake last year and is close to his best, so hugely respected this week.

7. Patrick Cantlay –4 (+2000)

Patrick Cantley is still to win this season despite his strong form and requires consideration this week.

8. Brian Harman –4 (+7500)

Local hero, Brian Harman was back to solid form for the first time last week after his Open Championship win in July. A dark horse with strong local ties and knowledge.

Sleeper

11. Xander Schauffele –3 (+3000)

Xander Schauffele’s record at East Lake is fantastic having had the best 72-hole score on two occasions and being placed in the top-4 on five of six occasions. Xander Schauffele is worthy of serious consideration in a 72-hole market (+1200) at BetOnline.
