This week, we’re diving into the grand finale of the PGA Tour season: the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake in Georgia. As the top players gear up for the final showdown, we’re breaking down everything you need to know, including the best betting odds from top sportsbooks, for this thrilling conclusion to the season.

TOUR Championship 2024

August 29 – September 01, 2024 at East Lake Golf Club

Course Notes

  • East Lake Golf Club
  • Par 70, 7346 yards
  • Designer – Donald Ross
  • Bermuda Grass Greens
  • Possibly Donald Ross’s greatest design though Rees Jones has renovated the track twice and Andrew Green once in the last thirty years to keep up with the modern technology.
  • Long iron play can be a key stat to use on the PGA Tour website.
  • Often a challenging test although with two low scoring wins for Rory McIlroy and one for Viktor Hovland last year, the top 30 from a long season are understandably in the ascendency.

Weather Forecast

Currently, oppressive hot temperatures forecast for this week in Atlanta so a test of stamina for the players at the end of a long season.  Possible electrical storms forecast for Saturday.

Tour Championship Explained

The Tour Championship is a complete outlier to the traditional 72-hole event and starts with the players handicapped by their current position in the FedEx race.

This means you must be careful with your bets and that you are placing them on the correct market. The two choices are:

  • To win the Tour Championship – this market is settled on the Tour Championship result
  • The Tour Championship without starting strokes – this market is the traditional 72-hole best score

This means effectively, the leader of the race gets the best position to start the race, and the rest follow as below.

Players 11-15 start –3, players 16-20 start –2, players 21-25 start –1 and players 26-30 begin level par.

Can We Oppose Scottie Scheffler?

Scottie Scheffler has been the standout player of 2024 with his wins at the Masters Tournament, Olympics, and Players Championship but there have been times recently when perhaps the New Jersey-born Scheffler is starting to show signs of the accumulated fatigue of a long season.

At the St. Jude Championship, both on and off the course these issues raised their head when in one of the press conferences at the event, Scheffler spoke of being frustrated at the FedEx Cup format which is understandable given his seven wins dwarf the rest!

Then on the course, he showed unusual signs of frustration with his caddy Ted Scott and regardless, despite it being such a brilliant season for Scheffler it has been emotionally tiring one, especially when he was arrested wrongly at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler’s behavioural changes in Memphis suggest this week is the perfect opportunity to oppose golf’s undisputed #1.

Keep It Simple With Xander

This week looks tailor made for Xander Schauffele to win the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship. Schauffele’s season has been a superb one with two major championships.

The thirty-year-old from San Diego must be feeling on the top of the world, with his confidence never higher but unlike his main rival, he looks in control of his emotions and fully focused for the task at hand.

Even without those factors, Schauffele often rates a strong bet at the East Lake Golf Club each year as he has become a real course specialist.  His 72-hole finishes have never been out the top 7 when he has played the event and on three of those occasions, he has been the 72-hole stroke play winner without starting strokes.

The first of those occasions seven years ago in 2017, he won FedEx Cup on his debut in the event.

This year, he begins two shots behind Scheffler in the Tour Championship market and with the handicapping system in play reducing the pool of likely winners, he is the obvious play to overcome the handicap on the restless world #1.

It is a complicated week on the PGA Tour, but Xander Schauffele is enabling us at BMR to keep things simple as we back him to win the FedEx Tour Championship and the 72-hole market without starting strokes.
