Avila: The Story So Far
California’s Julia Avila has never been the most trustworthy fighter to back, but after fighting just five times since her UFC debut in 2019, a 3-2 promotional record, and a year-plus layoff since her last octagon appearance, which was a loss to Miesha Tate, confidence in her abilities are at an all-time low.

Cavalcanti: The Story So Far
In contrast to Avila, one of the freshest UFC women’s bantamweight, Jacqueline Cavalcanti has been on an absolute tear since arriving to the octagon in 2023. The former LFA champion has won three straight bouts by decision, and in the same time frame Avila has fought five times for the UFC, this Portuguese-based competitor has an 8-1 pro record across several MMA organizations.

Once upon a time, Avila owned a small amount of hype following an impressive round-one stoppage win over Gina Mazany. However, a return loss to Sijara Eubanks, and she’s faded into obscurity. It’s obvious that she’s a part-time fighter now, and although her ground game is respectable, she isn’t the kind of fighter you want to trust with your money.
At 36, with a serious lack of octagon time, I struggle to picture a clear path to victory for Avila. For Cavalcanti, she’s a former LFA champion who’s collected a three-fight win streak in the UFC while Avila has been sidelined, and that’s going to be a serious confidence booster when attempting to keep the unbeaten streak going.
Avila will be lost in striking exchanges, and at a kickboxing range, Cavalcanti will be the superior fighter, as it’s an area where she thrives. As mentioned, Avila does have a nice ground game, but her takedown attempts aren’t the greatest; meanwhile, Cavalcanti isn’t the type of opponent who’ll be put on her back without a fight!
Cavalcanti by Decision Reasoning
WMMA and heavy-betting favorites aren’t my usual go-to, but the available UFC odds with Bookmakers Review are siding so heavily with Cavalcanti for a good reason. Avila is far beyond her prime, and when that’s coupled with octagon inactivity, she will struggle versus a prospect that’s shown promise of late.
However, Avila is tough, and Cavalcanti will be happy to point-fight her way to victory. With an at-range kickboxing style, the most likely game plan for the favorite won’t push for a finish. With this, take her to win by making a decision for a significant boost in her odds pricing.

Walker: The Story So Far
Valter Walker’s UFC 2024 debut was far from impressive. The Brazilian brother of famed light heavyweight Johnny Walker went the distance with Lukasz Brzeski in a stalemate battle, yet the result really could’ve gone either way.
This doesn’t sound like a fighter you’d want to support moving forward, but here’s the kicker: Walker dropped a ton of weight for his second octagon appearance, looked in the best shape of his life, and a clear athleticism advantage saw him make quick work of Junior Tafa, whom he submitted in the first round.

Mayes: The Story So Far
Don’Tale Mayes has a great and successful fight team around him, Jackson Wink MMA, but this hasn’t transitioned to the octagon very well. Aside from aging and low-level competition, he’s defeated nobody worth mentioning, and a 4-5 UFC record puts him in a losers column, wherein most of his fights result in stale and undesirable performances.

Walker’s path to victory is clear: He’ll want to drag Mayes to the mat and outclass him from top control, where he can hunt the submission or ground and pound his foe. This shouldn’t be difficult, considering Mayes average wrestling skill set. Furthermore, we know heavyweights aren’t the best at scrambling, so it usually takes one takedown, and the fight on the bottom will likely remain until the fight finishers or the round ends.
Walker has shown time and time again that he’s a credible takedown artist with submissions and heavy ground and pound. Yes, his striking offense has a lot to be desired, but at the same time, while Mayes will be the more talented boxer of the two, there won’t be much finishing threat, and in turn, rushing through the pocket for the takedown will be an available route to taking this fight to the mat.
Walker Moneyline Reasoning
With multiple threats on the ground and an opponent that doesn’t have a credible grappling base, hopefully, Walker’s slim, athletic version turns up this weekend because if he does, I struggle to see Mayes surviving this fight.
The available UFC odds favor Walker, but at -210, he’s the perfect parlay piece as a fighter whose opponent presents few threats in any one area of MMA.
