Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels

Tuesday, September 17,  2024 – 09:38 PM ET at Angel Stadium

We think that runs will be hard to come by in a matchup of two of the worst offenses in baseball against right-handed pitching. Thus, we are backing the Under when Davis Martin and the White Sox visit Griffin Canning and the Angels.

Nice Peripherals

Davis Martin comes in winless in eight starts at 0-4 with a 4.14 ERA, but his peripherals suggest he is a much better pitcher than that. He has not gotten much run support, which is not surprising while pitching for a team that is currently 36-115 for the season.

His team aside, Davis does have a nice strikeout rate of 8.49/9, which is supported by a good swinging strike rate of 11.3%, as well as a high groundball rate of 47.5%. That is a combination that would normally win you a lot of games if pitching for a decent team. Furthermore, he also has a very good soft contact ratio of 23.1% thanks to a 5-pitch arsenal highlighted by a slider rated 113 on Stuff+ and an outstanding change-up rated an impressive 139!

He will try to find that elusive first win against an Angels’ offense ranked 27th out of 30 teams in wRC+ against right-handers at just 88.

Facing Worst Offense

Now, we totally get that Griffin Canning has struggled overall at 5-13 with a bloated 5.35 ERA and 4.78 xFIP. He had appeared to turn the corner by allowing three runs or less in three straight starts prior to his start last Tuesday, but he was then shelled for nine earned runs in 5.1 innings by the Twins in Minnesota.

With all that being said, this would not be the first time that the White Sox offense has made a pitcher seem better than he is. And to his credit, Griffin did record a Quality Start the last time he faced them allowing three runs in six innings. We would not at all be surprised by a similar effort here against a Sox team ranked dead last in the majors in wRC+ against righties at a meager 76.

The Pick

This wager has more to do with these offenses (or lack thereof) than the pitchers, although Martin has some nice metrics and Canning pitched well the last time he faced the White Sox. Therefore, we are betting on the Under in Anaheim on Tuesday.

Predicted Score: Angels 4 – White Sox 2
