Scottie Scheffler shortest PGA Championship favorite since Tiger Woods​

Scottie Scheffler is in the midst of the most dominant run by a pro golfer since Tiger Woods in his prime.

Scheffler, ranked No. 1 in the world, became the first golfer since Woods in 2007-08 to win four tournaments in five PGA Tour starts when he won the RBC Heritage the week after winning the Masters.

He also is the shortest favorite to win this week’s PGA Championship since Woods was 4-1 in 2013, according to sportsoddshistory.com.

Scheffler is the +450 favorite at the Westgate SuperBook to win the year’s second major, which tees off Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.

At Caesars Sportsbook and Boyd Gaming, he is 3-1, the shortest odds to win any major since 2009, when Woods was +175 to win the PGA Championship and +175 to win the U.S. Open.

“If he putts decent, he’s going to win,” Woods said May 1 on “The Today Show” in reference to Scheffler starting any tournament. “If he putts great, he blows away fields. If he has a bad putting week, he contends. He’s just that good of a ball-striker.”

Scheffler hasn’t played since his win at the Heritage on April 22. His wife, Meredith, recently gave birth to the couple’s first child, Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig tweeted Saturday.

“He’s got recent time away from the course, but he’s just been in such solid form for so long, I don’t think it’s going to affect him too much,” SuperBook golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman said.

Scheffler, 40-1 to win the Grand Slam, is the PGA Championship money leader at the SuperBook and tied for third in tickets with Rory McIlroy, the +750 second choice to win the major. Scheffler is the ticket and money leader at BetMGM.

Ludvig Aberg is No. 1 in tickets and No. 2 in money at the Westgate, where he’s 20-1.

Brooks Koepka, the defending champion and winner of three of the past six PGA Championships, is 16-1. He is second in tickets and fourth in money at the SuperBook.

Woods, a 200-1 long shot, is the largest liability at the Westgate, where a bettor wagered $1,000 to win $100,000 (100-1) in February on the 15-time major champion.

“You’re always going to have liability on Tiger,” Sherman said. “But it’s too limited of a schedule for him. He’s dealing with too many issues.”

Woods finished the Masters with a 16-over 304, his highest 72-hole score as a pro.

What are sharp handicappers recommending as their PGA best bets?​

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka enter the PGA Championship in top form, with each of them winning their last start.

Scheffler and McIlroy are the only golfers in single-digit odds to win the year’s second major, which tees off Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Xander Schauffele and Koepka are the next two choices on the betting board.

Jon Rahm is the +1850 fifth choice at Circa Sports. Wes Reynolds, co-host of VSiN’s “Long Shots” golf betting podcast, has made the two-time major champion one of his best bets to win the tournament.

“It seems like Rahm is a bit of the forgotten man this week,” said Reynolds (@WesReynolds1). “Rahm has yet to win in his debut season on LIV Golf, but he has not finished outside the top 10 in any one of those seven events.

“His brand of explosive ball-striking and sharp short game makes him one of the game’s true elites and a danger on any golf course, especially one like Valhalla.”

Here are Reynolds’ other best bets, with comments on each:

Bryson DeChambeau, 28-1

“DeChambeau still leads the golf world for driving distance and can overpower most golf courses. He is a previous winner on a Jack Nicklaus (designed course) having won the Memorial at Muirfield Village back in 2018.

“He led the Masters for strokes gained off-the-tee and finished top five in last year’s PGA at Oak Hill, so he has some good recent form at major championships.”

Joaquin Niemann, 41-1

“Niemann has drifted a bit after his hot start to 2024, but he has been the best player on LIV Golf this season already with two victories and six top 10s.”

Patrick Cantlay, 48-1

“The current No. 8 player in the world has yet to show the major championship pedigree befitting of his ranking, but Valhalla could be the ticket for Cantlay to finally really be in the hunt to win a major.

“He has always played well on Nicklaus designs, most notably having won the Memorial twice at Muirfield Village.”

Tony Finau, 90-1

“He has been a mess with the putter, but his tee-to-green game has still been very good. He is a fit for a bigger golf course, as he ranks behind only McIlroy, Rahm, Scheffler and Schauffele for strokes gained on longer courses.”

Akshay Bhatia, 150-1
“Bhatia won the Valero Texas Open last month and now has two PGA Tour victories in less than a calendar year. Bhatia has also won on Valhalla at the Junior PGA Championship in 2018.”

Dean Burmester, 150-1

“Burmester won earlier this season at the LIV event held at Doral in Miami. He is one of the longest drivers of the golf ball in professional golf.”

McIlroy (-120) over Schauffele

Westgate SuperBook golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman played McIlroy to win the PGA at longer odds than his current +760. But he still recommends McIlroy over Schauffele in a tournament matchup. McIlroy is coming off a win last week at the Wells Fargo Championship and won his last major at Valhalla in the 2014 PGA Championship.

“He’s probably feeling as well as he has in two years about his golf game,” said Sherman (@golfodds).

Mickelson (-145) over Woods

Sherman also bet on Phil Mickelson to beat Tiger Woods in a tournament matchup.

“I’m just going against Tiger,” he said. “He just plays so seldom in competition, I’ll take these guys who are at least playing.”

Sahith Theegala, 77-1

Tyrrell Hatton, 62-1

Sherman also backed a pair of long shots to win in Sahith Theegala and Tyrrell Hatton.

“Theegala has just had a fantastic season, a bunch of top 10s,” he said. “I consider this one not as prestigious as the other three majors. This is more for the taking for someone like him. The same thing with Hatton.”

Who are the biggest long shots to have won the PGA Championship?​

When Phil Mickelson became the oldest golfer ever to win a major at age 50 at the 2021 PGA Championship, he also became the biggest long shot to win the event in the 21st century.

Four of the five biggest long shots to win the PGA Championship have cashed tickets in the past 15 years, according to sportsoddshistory.com, which has odds dating to 1985.

Mickelson was as high as a 300-1 long shot before the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, South Carolina. A bettor at DraftKings sportsbook turned $1,000 into $300,000 after winning a wager on Mickelson at 300-1.

His odds dropped to 14-1 after the second round, when he was tied for the lead with Louis Oosthuizen. Mickelson had a one-stroke lead over Brooks Koepka entering the final round, then shot a 73 to win the Wanamaker Trophy by two strokes over Koepka and Oosthuizen.

Here are the next four biggest long shots to win the PGA Championship:

150-1, Keegan Bradley, 2011

Bradley was five shots behind with three holes to play at the Atlanta Athletic Club before one of the most stunning turnarounds in a major. He made back-to-back birdies, including a 35-footer on the 17th hole, before a monumental meltdown by leader Jason Dufner. Three consecutive bogeys by Dufner led to a three-hole playoff.

Bradley birdied the 16th hole in the playoff — his first outright lead of the day — and won by one shot for his only major championship.

125-1, Jimmy Walker, 2016

Walker held off Jason Day by one stroke after a 36-hole final at Baltusrol that was one of the longest days in PGA Championship history. Walker shot a 2-under 68 in the morning for a one-shot lead over Day, then finished with a 3-under 67 in the evening. Day made an eagle on the final hole to cut the lead to one, forcing Walker to make a par to win the Wanamaker Trophy.

125-1, Y.E. Yang, 2009

Yang beat Tiger Woods by three strokes in the first major that Woods failed to win when leading after 54 holes. Before Yang’s stunning victory, Woods was 14-0 when he went into the final round of a major atop the leaderboard.

Yang, a South Korean who became the first Asian-born player to win a major, led by one on the final hole. He then made a birdie to finish with a 2-under 70 at Hazeltine. Woods missed a par putt and shot 75.

Woods, who entered the final round with a two-shot lead, three-putted for a bogey at No. 4 and made another bogey at No. 8. That meant the final pairing went to the back nine tied for the lead. Yang took the lead for the first time all week by chipping in for an eagle from about 20 yards short of the 14th green.

70-1, David Toms, 2001

Toms won his only major championship by one stroke over Phil Mickelson at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Toms had a two-stroke lead over Mickelson after 54 holes. He led by one stroke heading into the final hole, before making a 12-foot putt to save par for the win. His winning score of 265 was the lowest 72-hole score ever at a major championship until Henrik Stenson shot 264 in the 2016 British Open.
