They should have last season and got max value for him but definitely should have this past offseason.

Now they’ll end up with nothing to show after losing arguably the most valuable player in the league to free agency.

So he made ~$10M over 5 years at LAA and in his 6th year he's making $30M.
What a steal.

They are estimating it will be $600M contract for 10 years in his next contract.
I'm kinda doubting the Angels have that kind of money. Their current salary is $217M/yr (6th in MLB).
The MLB avg is $161M/yr.

It's a tough spot to be in because the Angels likely aren't winning the World Series with Ohtani on the roster yet they find themselves in contention to at least make the playoffs. If they do make the playoffs maybe they can convince Ohtani to stay but that's highly unlikely since he can get a ton of money in free agency and land with a more serious contender to win the World Series than the Angels.

Very true and maybe that's enough to convince Ohtani to stay but I just wonder if it's enough because Ohtani can get a truckload of money and play for a team like the Yankees, Braves, or Dodgers who are always in the mix because they can spend money to field a team that can win the World Series.

Yeah just depends on what kind of dude Ohtani is

I do think it’s possible to be in the mix without a fat payroll though

Agreed. I doubt the Angles will be willing to lock him up for 10-12 years with what will likely be the richest contract in MLB history.

Especially since they finally got out of that horrible contract they gave Pujols where his production dropped dramatically the second half of it. (Which is basically what happens to almost every player after they hit mid-30s in the post-steroid era)

Plus, they only made the playoffs once in Pujols 10 years, 2014 where they lost in the divisional round.

They should trade him for as many young prospects as they can get.

If he goes to Ny they don’t have to win
He will bring in so much money they can come in last place yearly same with Phila
JJ, We all know there are a few teams that money means nothing.
NY
LAD

To a lesser extent:
Padres
Astros
Giants
Etc...

The Yankees and Dodgers will spend infinite sums to get what they want and not think twice.
