im a long term guy, the yrs prove that imo.most of the time i say well i been on the other side of that type game too and only dwell on it a short time before getting my head back in the numbers....lol maybe i have been doing this for so long i delete the losses fast and move on, imo you cant look back but forward for a healthy gambling career.

one key factor on losses with so many games going on a given day never drink and chase losses, i treat gambling as a real job and only drink when the games are ending on a day for me, you would not go to a so call real job and drink and do a good job long term imo.drinking only cause you to chase losses

Ckid, props to you for taking the time to answer JJ's question.

You hit on it. IMHO, gaming (cards or sports) is about assessing the PROSPECTIVE odds.

So many people look in the rear-view mirror. Think about the Monday Morning QBs who have all the answers the day after the game. It's ez to look backwards, much harder to assess the future.

I call it Gambler's Amnesia. We have to forget the losses otherwise it will consume us. The problem is that some of us (not necessarily you) continue doing the same dumb things that didn't work before.

For those who have a successful system, I imagine it's a lot like a baseball player. He fails 2/3rds of the time. Do you think he dwells on all his strikeouts and pop-ups? No, if he's successful he knows that what he's doing is right.

I disagree with some of the notions in this thread, like "deleting" losses or needing "amnesia" to get past them.

That implies a problem with emotionally handling losses, problems that could lead to more problems, like chasing. It's better to understand why the losses would affect you, then work on the psychology of gambling. It's not for everybody.

One must remember there are probabilities involved and variance in results. If that is understood, then emotional problems arise with things like betting too much and losing that bet. It boils down to patience and discipline.

It's ridiculous to think that you will win every bet, so a loss shouldn't affect you that much. They need to happen.

While most mistakes in capping can be rooted out before the game goes off, there is value in having and maintaing a "rearview look" at all results, including losses. Tracking is doing just that.

If you are forgetting your losses or not looking at them in retrospect you're not tracking your bets. That's a mistake.

So, you can see, I disagree with some of the notions in this thread.

Read that out loud.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it.

Forgetting losses to avoid being consumed by them is NOT the answer here.

It's a mistake.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's a mistake. It's a mistake i haven't yet conquered.

I also agree that forgetting losses to avoid being consumed by them is not the answer. But it's an answer I don't have the psychological education to get past. Perhaps if I went into therapy I could overcome it.

But in the end, this is a hobby for me, not a job or anything that requires therapy to overcome. If it were a problem I would seek counseling but it's not. I've been at this game over 20 years and it still hasn't negatively impacted me financially in the least.
