Very interesting. Some things I forgot:

1) This was the game after Duke beat KY in the amazing Regional final.
2) Fair to say that Duke was a little flat off that incredible game.
3) Indiana's big-men matched up very well against Laettner. To his credit, he didn't force it. I don't believe Christian took a FG-attempt in the L18:00 of the game.
4) Hurley had a great 1st half. Indiana wins the game otherwise, b/c Duke was flat.
5) A lot happened to Knight's career later on. As for strategy to beat an opponent, I'm not sure anyone in his prime was better. Only peer that comes to mind for basketball knowledge = Rick Majerus.
6) Damon Bailey started as a Sophomore in this game.
7) Bailey's career is often seen as disappointing. Maybe the buildup was too much, guy was under the microscope from age 12. Similarities to Steve Alford's game, but Alford was more fluid and more consistent and maybe more injury-free.

Chuck is a student of the game.

At the time I liked Duke, yes:

1) Laettner was cool. He seemingly got all the girls.
2) Bobby Hurley looked like a run-of-the-mill guy. Great Pt-guard.
3) And Coach K was a Pole.

...So, good combination. And they made for great drama.
Laettner still makes me and Kentucky fans sick to this day. That guy got all the calls and he should've been kicked out against UK for stomping on Aminu Timberlakes's chest after a basket but of course he didn't and Duke went on to win the game because Laettner didn't miss that day including the game winning shot which CBS loves to show all the damn time.

You're right. Laettner should have been kicked out for the intentional stomp. Considering the implications, wasn't going to happen.

It's still an amazing performance. Kentucky played more than well enough to win. For all the world, it looked like Woods hit the game-winner.

You normally don't think about a guy playing a Perfect Game in basketball. 10/10 from the floor, 10/10 from the line. 31 points and the buzzer-beater to win it, what a gut-shot.

Pitino struggling for words in the post-game. Pelphrey crushed in the locker-room. Enough said.
