I remember that. Didn’t they sue him because he retired before his contract ended and they wanted a chunk of the signing bonus back?
Yeah but there was some real bad blood- he wouldn't pay back a bonus, the team went to court, Sanders offered to pay back their original request, the team declined that offer and went for the kill in courtv& won, it basically wiped Barry out (he had invested in a local bank that went belly up and was way behind in child support too)

It was a really ugly situation and the fan base kinda turned on him...

He would definitely have emmitt Smith's record
You think so?

He was 32 or 33 when he left, there's not much in the tank at that point.

The only RB I feel that could have had ES # had it not been for a brutal injury and a poor example of parenting was A Peterson. He missed at least 3800 yards as a result, maybe more, plus the stigmas thereafter bouncing around the league

Oh yeah absolutely he only needed 3,000 more yards

31-32 is most people and athletes prime

But even if he was on the backside a declining Barry Sanders is still better than other running backs

AP could have gotten the record I agree if they would look at some players the same way we do with Tom Brady and that age isn't always the deciding factor on what someone has left

Too many organizations and coaches have that stuck in their head

Sanders retired at 30. at 29 he ran for 2000+ yards.

but agreed, his style of play, he would have aged quickly. He had a nice streak of no miss games to end his career, his cumulative hits were adding up. Would have been nice to see what he would have done for another contract though

Yeah he finally got tired of having no help, wanted traded, and they wouldn't, so he said screw this and retired

And look now... nothing has changed with Detroit after all this time

Funny thing is, no team would have wanted him. His style was so unique, the tackles for loss so numerous & detrimental at times, that I don't think any other team could have used him in the way Detroit did
