I think the main reason they did it was because it was uniquely his number. #6 is Bill Russell so they retired it as a Hall of Hamer.

The article says Miami handles things "a little different" when it comes to retiring jerseys. They have Michael Jordan's 23 in the rafters (never played in Miami) and Dan Marino's 13 (WTH) so maybe this isn't that unusual for the Heat.
