We are approaching that awesome time of year when football is in full swing, MLB playoffs are going, and the new NBA season is getting stated. I'll have my season-long NBA thread coming pretty soon. But I want to get some futures down while there's still some great value
Warriors to win NBA Finals +600
Warriors to win Western Conference +325
This is basically robbery. The lines for these should be like +200 and +120, respectively
This is pretty incredible value for a team that is pretty clearly the best team in the league, and I think by a considerable margin. Steph Curry is coming off a crappy shooting season (by his standards) and think he is going to be hungry and bounce back to some extent. I also love that Klay Thompson got a full offseason under his belt, and think that is going to allow him to get off to a better start. He showed that he hasn't lost much, but I think he will be more in rhythm quicker this year. Their young pieces showed some very promising signs, particularly Moody, and I think Wiseman is going to be a very nice addition to the team's interior. Defensively, this team could be the best in the league -- something that I think is being slept on by a lot of people. Draymond Green is still an elite defensive player -- he may have won the DPOY if he was healthy all of last year. Their perimeter defense looks great, and I think adding Wiseman in around the rim is going to make them even harder to score against.
I also don't see a team out there that is built to really challenge them -- in either conference.
In the East, Boston was very lucky to be in the Finals last year honestly, and they match up horribly with the Warriors because of how weak and careless they are with the ball. Milwaukee also has problems in its backcourt and are way too dependent on Giannis. Having one superstar with a bunch of meh around you is not a recipe to beat a team like Golden State. Brooklyn's a huge wild card with some drama/team chemistry issues, Philly is going to choke inevitably because of Harden and Doc Rivers, and the rest of the conference has some good, but not great teams.
In the West, the Clippers are getting a lot of hype. But they have serious offensive issues, highlighted by the fact that Kawhi and PG really aren't complimentary players at all. And are we sure John Wall is any good? The Mavs will be formidable and play good defense, but their offense isn't designed to beat a team like the Warriors: Luka dribbling a lot, and guys shooting catch-and-shoot 3's. To beat the Warriors, you have to be able to take their guards off the dribble -- Dallas isn't that team. We saw how bad of a match-up that was in the WCF. Nuggets? Yeah they have Jamal Murray back but they don't have much else, and they have some serious issues on defense. Phoenix is OK defensively, but they really lack scoring punch on offense outside of Booker. I love LeBron, but the Lakers are plucky at best as long as Russ is on the roster. The rest of the West is pretty down.
The only thing that could stop the Warriors is injuries. They are a team that is going to be improved, which is scary given they already the best in the league and went 16-5 despite not shooting particularly well from 3 in the playoffs.
Lakers over 45.5 wins +105
This is my other future for now that I think has decent value. Despite the circus that the Lakers were last year, they should get to 46+ wins. They were an above .500 team when LeBron/AD/Russ played last year against a top 10 schedule, despite the clunky-ness and lack of chemistry. I do think even if Russ is on the roster for more of the year, they will be able to at least be a pesky team. They added some nice defensive pieces, as well as some athleticism on the inside. I don't think LeBron is quite that top guy in the league, but he is going to make sure this team is competitive -- as long as AD is healthy.
I will have more of these in the next week or so, but locking these in now.
Also, do not waste money on either the Los Angeles Clippers or Philadelphia 76ers futures this year. They both SUCK when it matters most!!!!!!
