True story:
  • Guy buys a used Tesla from another owner. It still has warranty coverage left on it.
  • Guy takes to the local Tesla repair center to have a problem fixed. Service manager says, "No problem. Its under warranty". Costs would have been $6K but doesn't charge Guy due to warranty.
  • Guy immediately takes car on 300 miles trip with wife and 2 young kids. During their drive they see that the navigation and "super-charger" location map isn't working. Wife uses phone to find Tesla charging location. They pull in and car won't charge. They have < 20 miles of range left.
  • Guy calls Tesla service manager and is told, "Yeah, we've disabled all your navigation and charging capabilities until you pay the $6k". Guy argues about still being under warranty. Service manager agrees but says, "Corporate made the call. You have to pay or your car is disabled"
  • Guy says, "WTF". Service manager explains, off the record, "Tesla doesn't like 3rd party sales of their cars. They want to be able to buy them back to mark them up and make more profit".

Elon is one hell of a business man. He's soon to release a book, "How to F#k over the Consumer".
