Baseball returned in all its glory over the weekend. Once again, the pure madness of betting baseball was on full display and we supplied the highlights (or lowlights). Steph Curry won a golf tournament thanks to a hole-in-one and an eagle putt on the last hole and had a Subway sandwich to celebrate. (OK, that was not true).

With the Angels dropping a series to Houston, does that seal the deal about moving Ohtani? See what the oddsmakers are thinking about this. Also, check out our hot MLB trends and free picks!

About Last Weekend…

Tennis

Carlos Alcaraz is 20 years old and already has won two majors with his stunning upset of Novak Djokovic Sunday in five fascinating sets. It felt like a foregone conclusion Djokovic would win, but the young Spaniard) broke Djokovic's serve five times in the match and was super athletic and made shots from hard angles.

The loss ended Djokovic’s 34 straight wins at Wimbledon, the 3rd-longest streak among men in the Open Era.

MLB

The return of baseball saw some unexpected results.

Cincinnati was playing the best baseball outside of Atlanta and took over first place in the NL Central. So naturally the Reds’ red-hot offense scored three runs in the entire series (two shutouts) and were swept at home by Milwaukee.

Speaking of Atlanta, the Braves went into the All-Star break a scorching 27-5 and faced the laboring Chicago White Sox. So what happens, after losing the series opener 9-0, the Pale Hose win the last two contests to take the series, naturally.

If you had the Astros on Saturday night and the Yankees on Sunday, we are sorry for bringing this up.

Houston had leads of 3-0, 9-3, and 12-9 in extra innings and could not hold on to any of them against the Angels, who were in the midst of losing six in a row. For fans of predictive models that determine chances to win, the Astros twice in that game had a 99% chance to win. The only time the Halos had a lead was the last play of the game on a throwing error with two outs that allowed the winning run to score.

The Yankees bullpen going into yesterday was the best in baseball in run prevention. New York had leads of 3-1 in the 8th inning and 7-5 in the 11th inning, but the bullpen surrendered seven runs, making this a historically bad game for New York.

And if that was not bad enough, with a 7-5 lead, Yanks reliever Nick Ramirez conceded his first home run of the season having pitched in 19 games for over 22 innings. And with the game at 7-7, the Rockies’ Alex Trejo hits his first homer of the season for the walk-off winner, after 120 at-bats.

Trendy Talk

MLB

  • Washington is 8-1 (+12.4 Units) in road games after allowing eight runs or more this season.
  • Cleveland is 15-3 after two or more consecutive losses.
  • Boston is 18-5 after a win by four runs or more.
  • Seattle is 0-10 vs. an AL starting pitcher whose ERA is 3.70 or better.
  • Cleveland is 19-2 Under having lost 4 or 5 of their last 6 games.
  • N.Y. Yankees are 16-3 Under having lost 6 or 7 of their last 8 games the last two seasons.

  • Philadelphia is 14-2 Under after three or more consecutive wins. (Tuesday)

What to Watch for and Win (Hopefully)

The Buzz

MLB – Shohei Ohtani Next Stop?

The Angels are going nowhere and now have to decide what to do with Ohtani. He hit his league-leading 34th home run last night, which puts him on pace to hit 58 homers this season. Angels’ owner Arte Moreno doesn’t want to be known for trading a modern-day Babe Ruth, but if Ohtani just walks after the season, a real likelihood, to get nothing for him compounds the stupidity.

Here are the latest odds on what will happen.

Golf – Steph Curry Is the Full Sports Package

Steph Curry has made plenty of walk-off winners on the hardwood. Yesterday, he did the same at the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe.

NFL – DeAndre Hopkins to Tennessee

Once again, the Titans are going after a wide receiver who is at least a little past his prime in signing Hopkins. The deal is expected to be complete over the next few days, will give Hopkins a base salary of $12 million in the first year, and could reach up to $15 million with incentives.

Given the Tennessee QB situation is far from ideal and the roster has holes, this probably means this is the best Hopkins could do in the open market.

Top Betting System

MLB – Giants (-145 ML) vs. Reds

Play Against home teams like Cincinnati off three straight losses vs. a division rival, winning between 51% and 54% of their games on the season. Teams like the Reds in this exact situation are 7-29 since 2019.

Out the Door

NCAAF – SEC Honors Mike Leach

The SEC Football media days started and Commissioner Greg Sankey gave proper respect to Mike Leach by not wearing a tie to start the festivities.
