Not everybody loves hockey, but most sports fans do during the Stanley Cup. No. 8 seed Florida has played remarkable defense and their last line of defense, the goaltender, is incredible.

If you have been following baseball, you know or have heard how bad Oakland is. We explain how bad. Sometimes getting fired can work for you, ask Nick Nurse who is up for two different jobs in the NBA. This and our usual array of trends and free picks and other thoughtful information.

About Last Night…

NBA

The Boston Celtics staved off elimination by outscoring Miami by 23 points in the second half. For whatever reason, the Celtics finally shot the 3-ball well (18 of 45) while Miami did not at 8 for 32.

We did get a smile on our faces when it was mentioned on social media that Boston at +220 might be a good bet to win the series. Teams down 3-0 in a series are 0-149 all-time in the NBA in an attempt to come back and win the series.

The underdog is now 4-0 ATS in the East Finals.

NHL

Dallas was bet rather heavily at sportsbooks for Game 3, moved from -140 to -155 to get back in the series against Vegas after two OT losses.

However, the Golden Knights scored on their first shot of the game. Minutes later Stars captain Jamie Benn went temporarily insane and took GVKs Mark Stone down and cross-checked on the neck and was ejected and his team got a five-minute major penalty.

Dallas was doing a fantastic job killing the long penalty, but after almost scoring when short-handed, the Stars got caught up ice, and Vegas took advantage to score. Then 73 seconds later with Dallas reeling it was 3-0 at just seven minutes into the game and it was over.

If you had the Stars, it was terrible because they beat themselves which nobody saw coming.

MLB

The Cubs look like they are on their way to another dismal season, but this has always been the case with this sorry franchise. However, sometimes things happen and Cubs fans almost always find a reason to go to Wrigley Field.

Christopher Morel has bounced back and forth between the big club and Triple-A and was recently called up after a hot start. Morel has hit a home run in five straight games and has nine deep shots in a dozen games. Since 1900, only Mike Schmidt of Philadelphia in 1976 had more homers to start a player’s season (11). Morel is in the history books for doing this also.

Toronto had lost seven of eight but was a modest -103 road underdog at Tampa Bay. The Blue Jays emptied their frustration bucket and clobbered the Rays 20-1. That type of victory had not been accomplished in 126 years of baseball.

To the surprise of nobody, Oakland lost 3-2 to Seattle and is 10-40 on the season. That places the A’s on this short of failure.

  • 1904 Senators: 9-41
  • 1932 Red Sox: 10-40
  • 2023 Athletics: 10-40

Trendy Talk

  • L.A. Dodgers are 12-1 with a team slugging percentage of .440 or better on the season.
  • N.Y. Mets are 1-7 road games vs. a team with a good bullpen whose WHIP is 1.35 or better.
  • Kansas City is 13-1 Over an upset win vs. a division rival as an underdog of +130 or higher.
  • San Diego is 16-3 Under in May games this season.
  • Tampa Bay is 19-5 Over vs. an AL team with an on-base percentage of .330 or lower.

The Buzz

NHL – Florida’s Brick Wall

For those that recall or have not heard, Florida’s regular goalie Sergei Bobrovsky started the playoffs on the bench. Alex Lyon had gotten hot and had a lot to do with the Panthers even making the postseason.

Bobrovsky entered Game 3 of the series against Boston in a loss and got the next game assignment which was also a defeat. However, Bobrovsky is 10-1 (including 6 OT wins) and he has stopped 110 of 111 shots he faced recently against Carolina. No wonder Florida is heading to the Stanley Cup as the 8th seed.

NFL – Might Want to Check This Guy

If you are an NFL football person all year round, Warren Sharp @SharpFootball is a good follow on Twitter. You might not agree with everything he says (I don’t) but it is thought-provoking.

WNBA – Historic Night for Atlanta Dream

Having lost their opener, Atlanta was down 19 points to Minnesota on the road Tuesday. But thanks to a late third-quarter comeback and a 24-10 fourth-quarter blitz, the Dream won 83-77 as two-point underdogs. That was Atlanta’s largest-ever comeback.

Top Betting System

MLB – Blue Jays at Rays’ (-175 ML)

Play Against Wednesday road underdogs with a moneyline of +150 or more like Toronto, batting .315 or better over their last five games. Wednesday because it could be the end of a series or a middle game. Teams hitting this well should not be this large an underdog and they are 19-92 over two decades in this spot.

Out the Door

Baseball – Scoring Differential

With Tampa Bay losing by 19 last night, for the first since Day 5 of this season, they do not lead baseball in scoring differential.

1. Rangers +111

2. Rays +107

3. Dodgers +57

4. Braves +54

5. Astros +52

...

26. Tigers -51

27. White Sox -55

28. Marlins -57

29. Royals -71

30. A's -178

MLB – Something to Think About as a Baseball Bettor Tonight

Boston was shut out 4-0 last night at Anaheim. The Red Sox are 11-25 following a road shutout loss when priced between -125 and +125, and facing the same opponent since 2006.

NBA – Coach Nick Nurse in Demand

Having been fired at Toronto, Nick Nurse is on the short list of both the Suns and Bucks and one seems likely to hire him.
