Are they trying to lower viewership?
Not appealing matchups. A few things:

1) In pre-season, that Den/Buf game might have looked better.
2) By contract, these teams have a limit on how many prime-time games they can play. Used to be a Max of 6 games...and a Min of one game.

*When the Lions were down, their only key-time game was often the Thx-giving day game.

*I know the Thurs games were designed to put each team on Thurs ONE time during the year. Not sure if that rule changed.

Net effect is that one can expect the best teams to be on MNF 3x. I think that's the cap. But there's a cap on how many prime-time TV games a team can play.

Also, the flex-scheduling can be used within limits:

Flexible scheduling is in effect during the following windows (the "Flex Scheduling Windows"):

  • For Sunday Night Football, it may be used up to three times between Weeks 5-14, and at the NFL's discretion during Weeks 15-17;
  • For Monday Night Football it may be used at the NFL's discretion in Weeks 12-17;
  • For Thursday Night Football it may be used up to twice between Weeks 13-17.
