Why does no one talk horse racing anymore ?

There was a time when horses were THE sport to gamble on. Tracks were the hub of all gambling activity and chatter.

Now no one cares outside of a Saturday in May. Crooked trainers, horses breaking down and dying and horses lightly raced to preserve their “unbeaten” records going into triple crown races and going against watered down fields.

It’s sad to see the sport now - especially with racino/casino action returning purses to a profitable level again.

I used to follow much closer - both throughbred and harness.

Could be worse I guess - look at greyhound racing - what are there 2-3 tracks left running in US ? That was gambling to true degenerates in my day - literally just take the long shots on a cold night on Wheeling Island - guaranteed you won money by end of the card.

A complete sucker sport and new gens want nothing to do with it , casino gambling replaced it
It still has its niche and decent volume bigger tracks

I get it’s the slow period - but like baseball - its popularity has dropped dramatically.

Lots of tracks have folded over the past couple of decades. Those left have decent volumes - but attendance sucks.

I think it’s more crooked trainers - a decade of being unprofitable for all but the super wealthy and top flight trainers and just a general attitude of indifference from bettors that’s hurt more than PETA.

Greyhound racing is tough - I mean to train/race a horse - you at least have to have a little financial backing. Greyhounds there were some absolute idiots out there who needed to have been ran off for good of the sport.

Harness is accessible to the everyman around here - or at least the well off everyman. Still - not uncommon to see some yearlings bringing well into the 6 figures with a select few the last few years pushing 7 figures. That’s a hell of a lot of money for a horse.
