One thing I was thinking of is how it says he tried to bet $400k on the US on the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Europe staged a final day comeback with Phil losing a critical match to Rose. Big late comeback by Rose from several holes down.

US loses the Ryder Cup 14.5-13.5 to Europe.

If Phil beats Rose US would have won the Ryder Cup. Maybe Phil did have a lot of $$ on it and the pressure got to him.
