2024 Preakness Stakes Betting Guide
After a week of uncertainty, horse racing fans got the good news that Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan will run in the Preakness.
Though we understand breeding has changed along with other aspects of the sport when running a top thoroughbred just two weeks between races doesn’t make as much sense as it used to, nonetheless, having the Derby winner in Baltimore makes for a better storyline for all parties concerned.
However, that news has been offset by learning Wednesday morning 8-5 favorite Muth has been scratched due to a fever. According to DailyRacingForm.com Muth’s trainer Baffert said while horses frequently get shipping fever and can get over it quickly, the fact Muth’s temperature was as high as 103 degrees and he did not eat made it an easy decision to scratch. “I didn’t want to take any chances, it was a quick call,” Baffert said. “You got to jump on it right away, you got to treat it and forget about it.”
We will now have eight horses breaking out of the gate this Saturday, let’s break down the field.

Top Preakness Contenders
With Muth out, Mystik Dan (5-2 odds) becomes that favorite and he will try and become the eighth horse to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown this century on Saturday. It is no secret that jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will attempt to have a similar trip as MD did in Louisville, which is to find a way to the rail and create the shortest possible trip, saving energy of his ride.
MD was third to Muth at the Arkansas Derby, however, when this article was posted, there was a 60 percent chance of shows Saturday in Baltimore, and Mystik Dan’s fastest speed rating (also fastest in the field) came on an off-track. Will the energy be there late?
Catching Freedom (6-1) was a very popular early Run for the Roses choice on Derby week. He is one of three horses to run in that race and his attraction is he is known as a deep closer and showed it, coming back from 15th to finish 4th.
Trainer Brad Cox is not just taking a shot in this race, he knows his horse got pinched in the back of the pack two weeks ago and will need to be just off the pace to have a chance to win, something CF have accomplished three times in six starts. The Preakness is not kind to deep closers for several reasons, yet, at the same time, Catching Freedom has never had a bad race which keeps him in the mix.
No Lack of Imagination
Imagination by results has fair odds at 6-1, with two triumphs and four 2nds in a half dozen starts. He is the stablemate of Muth and fits the role fans of this sport comprehend as Baffert’s “other horse” that he loves to use in big races. However, that role changes now and he becomes the focus of the Baffert crew.
Among concerns for Imagination is he was second to Stronghold in the Santa Anita Derby and he was a distant 7th at the Kentucky Derby. One big change for Imagination is with eight horses instead of nine, history showed the #9 position had only won the Preakness four times. Moving over one spot could help Imagination immensely in this race.
Next Group of Preakness Contenders
Trainer Chad Brown has twice won the Preakness with Cloud Computing (2017) and Early Voting (2022). The method he has used is having his horse skip the Derby and focus on this race at a distance the horse is comfortable with.
Horses are long shot for a reason and this will be just Tuscan Gold’s (8-1) fourth race, having won once and finishing 3rd at the Louisiana Derby. If there is a thoroughbred behind the favorites with a shot to win, it is this one.
Preakness Summation
Mystik Dan takes over the favorite role, nevertheless, that doesn’t change he is still running on short rest. A wet track might be to MD’s liking if that occurs, but if he’s already fatigued, running in the slop takes more energy.
Tuscan Gold offers a mixed bag, but with Muth gone and Mystik Dan a potential mystery that opens the door for others and we’ll say this lightly raced horse charges to the finish line first.

2024 Preakness Stakes Early Preview
Although the 150th Kentucky Derby finished in spectacular fashion with the closest photo-finish since 1947 and a surprise winner at 18-1 odds, horse racing enthusiasts quickly turned their attention to the 149th Preakness Stakes, scheduled for May 18th, 2024.
The field for the race has been settled since Muth’s scratch on Wednesday, so futures odds from top-rated sportsbooks are available. In total, we’ll have eight horses vying for victory at Pimlico with Muth the favorite out of the running, all eyes are on the star of the Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan at 3-1 and Catching Freedom at 4-1.

On Saturday, May 11th, trainer Kenny McPeek confirmed the news that horse racing fans had been eagerly awaiting for: Mystik Dan will run the Preakness Stakes.
Now, we have to wait and see if MD will be able to cinch the Triple Crown. Muth, the big favorite for Preakness, is now not going to run at all.
Arguably one of the best horses of 2024, Muth did not participate in the Derby this year due to his trainer Bob Baffert being barred by the organization from entering his Thoroughbreds in this year’s edition.
This scenario sets the stage for an intriguing second leg of the Triple Crown series, so let’s break down some of its intricacies.
Did you know?
For example, although the Kentucky Derby is more well-known by the general public, the Preakness has the second-best attendance draw annually in horse racing, beating the Belmont Stakes, Breeders Cup and even the Kentucky Oaks Day (the day before the Kentucky Derby).
Another thing to keep in mind is the field size limit, capped at a maximum of 14 horses. However, the last time we saw a full field was in 2011, when Shackleford (12-1) defeated the favorite, Animal Kingdom (2-1).

Why Preakness Stakes is Popular
The top draw for decades was the winner of the Kentucky Derby who almost always ran in the Preakness. That gave the race an automatic air of anticipation. Could the winner of the first Triple Crown event have a repeat performance?
In recent years, because horses don’t race as often as in previous times, the two-week break is no longer considered long enough and not every Derby champion makes the trip to Baltimore anymore. That is a negative for the sport. Nonetheless, it is still a major attraction, just less so without the Kentucky Derby winner.
What sets the Triple Crown races apart?
As mentioned above, not all the Derby champs come to Pimlico in this era for various reasons. As to why, the sport has changed. Horses, with rare exception, don’t run every two weeks for top races in modern racing. Three races in five weeks have always been a lot to ask of a horse.
With training altered and so much money involved for the top horses, owners and trainers have too much at stake and it is better to pass up a race, even one like the Preakness, rather than have the horse lose its projected value.
Besides this, the 20-horse field at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May can see horses get bumped around quite a bit, which can take a physical and mental toll on the animal.
Shorter Distance
Another key aspect is the Preakness is shorter at a mile and 3/16, compared to the Derby at a mile and 1/4. That doesn’t make it a sprint, but the pace is generally quicker.
Though both Pimlico and Churchill Downs are two turn ovals of one mile, the shape of the ovals is different. That is partly the case because Churchill is 10 wider across than Pimlico.
The other important part is the corner embankments at Pimlico are lower, thus, jockeys have to slow the horses slightly so they stabilize their balance, compared to race tracks that have the normal 4 to 6-degree embankment that allow the horse and its rider to maintain a level of speed.
Preakness Stakes Fast Facts
- The Preakness Stakes is a Grade I race run over a distance of 1 3⁄16 miles (9.5 furlongs) on dirt. The race length has been altered seven times but has been at this distance since 1925.
- The Preakness is actually two years older than the Kentucky Derby, first run in 1873.
- The Preakness is the second leg of the Triple Crown since 1932. Before that, the Preakness was run before the Derby on 11 occasions.
- The immortal -Secretariat (1973) – still holds the record for the fastest time for 9.5 furlongs at 1:53.
- The largest margin of victory was by Smarty Jones (2004) at 11 ½ lengths. The oddity of that is the very first Preakness (1873) held the record at 10 lengths until then.
- Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert (and still going strong) holds the record for the most Preakness wins (8), which started in 1997.
- Jockey Eddie Arcaro holds the record for the most Preakness wins with 6.
Who's Running in the 2024 Preakness Stakes?
Post positions were drawn Monday, May 13th. On May 15th, favorite Muth, was scratched for a fever. The final eight that ran were:

In total, we’ll have nine horses competing for the middle jewel of the crown. Less than 24 hours after the Derby, Sierra Leone’s trainer, Chad Brown, made it clear that his next start would be in the Belmont Stakes.
Back to Japan
Meanwhile, Forever Young, the Japanese horse that finished third, will be skipping the rest of the Triple Crown and returning to the Land of the Rising Sun, along with 5th place T O Password. There was much anticipation regarding these two horses given their excellent showing last Saturday.
Sixth-place Resilience are also opting out. Stronghold is also a longshot after it was announced he’s heading back to California. So, which horses could we actually see in Pimlico on May 18th?
Baffert’s Back
While many Derby participants will skip the Preakness Stakes, we do know that Bob Baffert is eagerly anticipating this race. Baffert, a Hall of Fame trainer with the most wins at Preakness, was not banned from participating in this year’s Run for the Roses.
Baffert could potentially have a strong showing at Pimlico. Muth is the favorite, with odds of 8-5. Then, Mystik Dan at 3-1 and Catching Freedom with odds of 4-1. Imagination is another one of Baffert’s horses and is 8-1.

Tuscan Gold, trained by Chad Brown, is 5-1.
Meanwhile, Seize the Grey (20-1) will also enter. Additionally, two others that have earned automatic berths this year include Informed Patriot and Copper Tax. However, neither will take part.
