The Spanish Association of Internet Bettors (AEDAPI) has been launched in Madrid with the goal to promote a new Spanish legislation, ending the existing monopolies in the gambling sector, and to create a safe and stable internet betting market.

AEDAPI, backed by four online sportsbooks, Interapuestas, Unibet, Betfair and Globet, and two online forums, Todoapuestas and Forobet, introduced the figure of the Bettor\’s Counsel (Defensor del Apostador) with the aim to protect bettors from fraudulent bookmakers.

The Association also presented a study of the Spanish internet betting market, which in 2005 with over half million users registered a 150 per cent growth in revenues up to EUR 225 million (divided among the 15 main operators).

Sacha Michaud, Director of Betfair Spain and spokesperson for AEDAPI, said online betting companies offer more opportunities to bettors although the current legislation in Spain favours land-based operations.

Yago Perrin, Managing Director of Globet, added that the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany will definitely consacrate the online betting industry and this is why the online bookmakers want to give a clean image of the sector.
