Are online poker sites next?

As reported by eGaming Review, the US Government favours further prosecutions and online poker sites could be next in the firing line.

“The government is in favour of bringing more prosecutions. I am confident there are more investigations going on. The prosecutors are seeing if they can bring more cases. Poker sites are on that wish list,” said John Baughman, gambling expert at New York law firm Paul Weiss.

In the meantime, online gambling operators which have continued to take bets from US citizens have reported big surges in customer sign-ups, while London law firm Tarlo Lyons said it will be interesting to see what effect the US Government will have on influencing UK approach to online gambling in the coming months, if any.

Back in the US, press reports suggest control of Congress may come down to the votes of the 20 million American online poker players and sports bettors.

“This largely apolitical group could well get politically motivated the first time they try to log on, and are told their small-stakes poker game has now been outlawed by the Republican leadership in Congress,” said Radley Balko of Cato Institute.
