As reported by De Morgen, Belgian soccer club Sint-Truidense is investigating the unusually high amount of money staked on its matches at online betting exchange Betfair.
For the home game against La Louviere on October 29, over EUR600,000 were staked on the match. That’s about 20 times more than is usually staked on top ranked clubs such as Anderlecht. A week later for the match against Cercle Brugge betting reached EUR230,000.
In both matches the most was staked on Sint Truidense to lose, and unsurprisingly the club lost respectively 3-1 and 2-1.
Sint-Truidense Chairman Roland Duchatelet checked game footage and interviewed players without finding any evidence his players were involved in match fixing.
However, Duchatelet had his players sign a declaration they would not bet on their own games or give away team information and informed police, indicating there might be a “serious problem.”
The Belgian soccer federation has not decided yet whether to pursue the issue.
