As reported by the Racing Post, a group of regular and trustworthy users of the Betfair forum are to be given responsibility to act as censors by vetting the 17,000 postings placed every day and take down any defamatory or offensive comments.
The monitoring programme, designed to be in place by the summer, has been proposed after lengthy negotiations with the Jockeys Association whose members are the subject of many forum threads.
“A number of our members have expressed concerns over comments made about them and jockeys in general on the Betfair forum,” commented John Blake, Jockeys Association Chief Executive.
“While often motivated through unsuccessful punting, there have been occasions when the postings have been malicious as well as unfounded. We have been discussing this issue with Betfair for a long period and we hope these changes go far enough to ensure their customers take responsibility for what they write and be aware that unacceptable and damaging comments will not go unchecked.”
“The Betfair forum is all about a free and frank exchange of views, but customers have to be aware that they are responsible and liable for the postings they make,” said a Betfair spokesman.
“We’re hopeful the processes we have already put in place, and our planned community leaders programme, will radically reduce the number of questionable postings.”
