The betting exchange expects to get its Tasmanian license within weeks and shortly thereafter it will be able to set a second “global hub” in Hobart.
“The barrier to us around the world is regulation. This shows that when independent governments look at regulatory questions, they licence us. Our aim is to be licensed around the world and make it a global business,” said Mark Davies, Betfair\’s Director of Communications.
“Australia\’s gaming market is roughly the same size as here despite the population being a quarter of the size. They will be able to bet with us in Australia from early 2006,” he added.
Betfair spokesman Andrew Twaits said he is confident to clear the hurdles which could prevent Betfair from operating Australia-wide.
One of such hurdles is a Victorian law that could be used to deny Betfair the approval of advertising and publishing race fields in that state.
“Provided our application is treated on its merits, which by law it has to be, we are very confident that we\’ll receive approval to publish race fields,” said Twaits.
