Andrew Twaits, Betfair’s Director of Corporate & Business Affairs, said the company was pleased that Racing Victoria appeared to have made it clear that the offer to Tasmania had ‘no strings attached’.
Twaits added that if the prospect of Betfair providing competition in Tasmania has pushed the mainland racing industry to offer support to the Tasmanian racing industry, they expect to see even more benefits flowing to Tasmanian racing if Betfair obtains a license.
However, while Racing Victoria Chief Executive, Robert Nason, confirmed that the commercial package offered to Tasmania is not dependant on what happens to Betfair’s license application, there is no doubt that it is an incentive to rule out the licensing of the betting exchange.
“I think it would be incredibility foolish of Tasmania to licence betting exchanges,” said Nason.
In separate news, a spokesman for Betfair said the headhunters started this week their search for a CEO and a CFO, which will be hired ‘in tandem’, but warned that the process ‘could take months’.
