According to press reports, one current and three former Juventus players, Buffon, Maresca (now at Sevilla), Chimenti (now at Cagliari) and Iuliano (now at Sampdoria), are being investigated for illegal betting on Serie A matches.
The four players have had telephone calls intercepted by the Guardia di Finanza, which is now looking into the movements of large amounts of money to seven different bank accounts that were used to place bets as high as EUR 100,000 per game. The Guardia di Finanza is a special police force that deals exclusively with financial crimes within Italy.
Elsewhere, two Vietnamese soccer players were arrested on bribery charges. Ho Van Loi and Huynh Hong Son, both ex-players in the former professional V-League Saigon Port Club, are accused of having received bribes to ensure that another team won the 2000-2001 V-League championship title. Gambling rings are said to be behind this and others soccer scandals in Vietnam, where people are passionate about both soccer and betting.
