According to a recent survey, live betting on NFL games is a popular option for bettors in the realm of U.S. sports betting, and the vast majority of those surveyed said they are aware of responsible gambling resources.
Betting Behavior
According to the Optimove 2023-2024 Report on NFL Wagering, 61% of those responding to the survey have placed live wagers on NFL games. It should be noted, that the survey was comprised of only 287 U.S. respondents who wagered on the NFL in August.
The small sample coupled with the demographic of what can be construed as avid NFL bettors, due to the fact they are wagering on preseason games, gives us insight into the proclivities of NFL bettors but cannot be interpreted as a definitive representation of the domestic betting market.
The study also showed that 92% are aware of responsible gambling resources that are available and spelled out on the websites and apps of sports betting platforms like the National Council on Problem Gambling and Gamblers Anonymous. As for budgeting, 81% said they have created a budget for their betting but 45% confessed to losing more than they could afford.
What Is Live Betting?
There was a time before the internet when getting a bet in before the game started was critical, otherwise, there would be no opportunity to bet on that particular game or event. If a college football game was slated to begin at 3:30 but was moved to noontime and a game time bettor was unaware of the change then it was a case of so sad, too bad.
But once internet sports betting came into vogue, the landscape changed. Many offshore sportsbooks began forming new lines and odds as the game progressed. And with the advent of online betting that has swept the American market, or at least a majority of it, it is now the norm rather than the exception.
There are many live-betting options available including updated point spreads and totals on the games as well as updated player and team props. The technology has evolved to where bettors can even wager on the outcome of an upcoming drive or possession.
It is all fast-paced and sometimes difficult to process with the odds constantly adjusting but according to the results of the survey, it appears as though bettors enjoy taking advantage of the opportunities that live-betting presents.
Platforms of Choice
The survey showed that 63% of the respondents bet on at least one NFL game per week while 37% said they bet on multiple games during the week. And surprisingly it showed 54% use multiple sports betting platforms which is a stark departure from earlier surveys that showed most people sign up for one app and no more than that.
In this survey, DraftKings was the most popular sports betting app as 23% said they preferred the Boston-based bookmaker while FanDuel came in second with 13% favoring the Flutter Entertainment betting platform.
20% of those surveyed said they had no preference but ease of navigability and bonus incentives were major reasons why they use the platforms they do. As for which kinds of bets were most highly sought after – point spreads, totals, and player props proved to be the most popular.
