The Portsmouth player admitted betting on Redknapp\’s return to Fratton Park, while the Football Association rules state that footballers cannot use inside information on moves or transfers for betting purposes.
“It was established that Hughes put a bet on Redknapp being named as the next manager of Portsmouth, but there was nothing to indicate that he had done so having used any kind of inside information. Therefore, no action was taken against the player, although he was given a reminder of the rules concerning footballers betting,” said the Football Association in a statement.
A source close to the FA added that when quizzed over the bet, Hughes was able to provide a plausible explanation.
