Paddy Power to enter the Italian market

The Irish bookmaker is considering a bid for one of the betting licenses to be auctioned by the Italian gaming regulator AAMS next week. “We\’ve eaten a lot of pasta in the last couple of weeks,” commented a spokesman for Paddy Power.

In other news, Betfair announced the launch of Betfair Italia, a wholly-owned subsidiary whose top priority is to work with the Italian gambling regulator to legally introduce the betting exchange product on the Italian market. Betfair Italia Chief Executive Massimiliano Bancora said the firm is also considering whether to submit a bid for a remote horse racing betting license.

While Stanley Betting International announced that it will not participate to the auction organized by AAMS to assign the new betting licenses necessary to operate on the Italian betting market, some localn betting companies such as Betting2000 and ScommesseItalia are close to sign joint venture deals with British betting operators. BetMania Italia is also discussing a partnership opportunity with a popular Asian bookmaker.

In the meantime, Sportingbet continues its expansion on the Italian market with the sponsorship of two popular basketball teams, while Eurobet entered the Italian market with the sponsorships of soccer teams Chievo Verona and Genoa FC.

UPDATE: Leisure & Gaming, which already owns BetShopItalia, is in advanced talks to acquire Betech, a new Italian betting provider.
