Two legislative councillors called for a parliamentary inquiry to examine the Tasmanian Government\’s plan to license the betting exchange.
The Tasmanian Government already said it will not support a parliamentary inquiry, which could take up to eight months and delay the flow of Betfair funding to the March Inter Dominion festival.
In separate news, UBS said the Tasmanian Government\’s decision to grant a license to Betfair will have a minimal impact on TABs on the medium-term.
The broker house bases its view on the fact that Betfair is already available in all Australian states except New South Wales and 80 per cent of TAB\’s turnover is generated on-course and agencies where the betting exchange is not present.
UBS believes that fixed odds bookmakers are more under threat than TAB pools.
However, on the long-term Betfair\’s impact may be more negative for the TABs as the new technology will change betting habits.
